Having not had a 4x4 before i was wondering if should try to insure my G through my usual broker or if it is best to use a specialist, do any companies do such a policy?
What sort of sum should i be paying for a policy?
Can you get an agreed milage policy as with classic insurance?
I am 41 with a clean licence & have not claimed before.

I think being younger than 30 makes a big difference. You are "grown up " then.
If you can limit the mileage it makes a difference too

Where in London are you based? What year is your G. Don't forget London is very expensive for insurance. Makes a difference where you park and whether you use it for work and even if you are married.

I'm paying about £700 fully comp including europe. Thats with one fender bender and the fact that I am on a foreign license. Was told I could probably half it if I get a UK license...

Oh and I live in one of the most expensive areas in London to ensure a vehicle. Labour heartland....

Check out the this previous thread:

and I do urge people to call Martin Pettit. Tell him you own a G and he will go on about it for sometime. A top bloke who was recommended to me from a *ahem* Land Rover *ahem* owning friend....

What do you think of the 123 series.? I had a 280E which was great.Sold it now. I always fancied a CE I think they look terrific. Good ones still command a decent price. I wish I had room for it.

I had a W126 which Mrs V loved driving & once i'd finished restoring the W123 CE i sold it on, she never quite got on as well with the W123 & always prefered the looks & ride of the W126. Although i also have A W126 500 Coupe i would not let it be used for shopping trips etc as it is near perfect. I have since bought another W126 saloon which she loves again so the CE has to go. There is no doubt that the W123 does not quite have the sheer ride quality of the W126 but having said that i personally love driving the thing & it looks great in CE form. If anyone here ever wants a good one just let me know.
They are not fetching that good money at the moment, probably partly to do with the time of year & a glut of used cars.

I thought I recognised your name. You are an active member on the MB owners' club board. I am a member of the club but only occasionally browse the board.

My G is insured through Peter Best using the MB Club insurance scheme. But I am covered for 30,000 miles per year (£500) so it is not cheap. Limited mileage is the cheapest option.

Insurance companies and thier people must be amongst the most despicable on earth. I have had all sorts of experiences with them when trying to shop around for a cheap quote. Like when after never claiming to my current company I was presented with a 70% hike in the premium for renewal. But when I presented proof that somebody else was prepared to insure me for less than the previous year premium they were delighted to match their price... Bottom line is that risk assessment is only considered when it is in their favour (when it allows them to increase the premium) otherwise the price is driven by the market....

I have never had a claim in seven years in the UK and nor has my wife. We are both over 30 (I'm actually 41) and both hold Spanish licences which you give us equal rights as if we held UK licences, but..... No points obviously (I'm never had a driving penalty in the UK). 1991 300 GD SWB Manual with 8,000 miles limited and £ 120 excess and we pay £ 378.88 but it is a LHD car and I am NOT gay....

Come to think of it, your right Jesus. A couple of months back i tried to get my insurance moved over from from a golf gti 2 litre 8 valve to my G as i was selling the car due to gwoa. Anyway the girl on the other end of the phone told me that it would be an extra £300 :!: :!: :!: to do so i was a little taken aback to say the least and decided to hold off for a couple of months as the old girl was going in to the garage for a make over.
Two months down the line i ring up direct line again asking the exact same thing and answering the exact same questions to my delight the guy told me that he would do a straight swop, happy and a little miffed i put the phone down very pleased with myself thinking that i had got one over on the insurance company.
later on i loged on to the forum a foung this thread. MAN THOSE INSURANCE COMPANYS ARE SCUM
(with a few excepitions obviously)

The only difference between an insurance man and Dick Turpin is, the insurance man doesn't even bother to wear a MASK!

In the 18th century insurance was a much despised occupation on a par with the lower end bookmakers; since then they have attempted, unconvincingly, to persuade folks that they are a respectable profession – they both do the same thing the only difference is that bookmakers don’t squeal like stuck pigs when they loose a bet. But I digress: last year I insured my truck with Carole Nash – very sensible price – no complaints, then came renewal: no claims – no changes the price doubled – why I ask? – Your car seems to have become a bad risk. So I call to someone who advertises a lot in the club mag (Adrian Flux) – cheaper than last year – great I thought. Whilst I was in the US for 2 months they cancelled my insurance – why? Because I hadn’t sent them my proof of GWOA membership, which reduced my premium by all of £15 – but it was enough for them to cancel and cost me over £100 for one months cover.

Sadly I now find Roadsure after its too late – better luck next year.

Directline, the lowest other quote I could find was £1,700 with Norwich Union but then they went up to around £3,500!

I hate to think what it's gonna rise to when I start the modifications!!!

Shows how much I love my G though!!!
