I have a lot of water coming in through the windscreen rubber. It seems to last quite a while after rain so I guess it is actually collecting in the rubber. From looking at it both in and outside, it is not showing any signs of perishing or damage but is quite clearly leaking. Before I go and buy a replacement, is there any other place I should be looking at where the water is getting in?

possible rust around windscreen?

Hey, nice to hear that you just bought a G... u'll love it!

Anyway, it's hard to say that it's just the rubber that's letting the water in. G-wagens (espcially the older 460 chassis) are known to rust around the windscreen. You may find that when you remove it, there will be a lot of rust around and may need to be treated. This may be the root of your problem so you may want to bear this in mind when removing the windscreen- this may be a tougher job than just simply changing the seals. BTW, be very careful removing the windscreen, I've heard many many stories from other G owners that have accidentally smashed the screen when taking it out due to its fragility and/or angle of the screen.

On a side note, other common rust spots are the sills and especially the rear quarter panels where the tail lights are. A lot of water gets trapped in there from the splashing of the rear wheels.

Good luck with the leaky windscreen! :D

You may find out that it is not the windscreen that is leaking, but the spindles of the windscreen wipers. Hold each of them tightly and try to move them sideways. Any appreciable movement would mean that they are letting water ingress inside. The good news is that the replacement parts are not expensive, if only a bit fiddly to source (I believe that the EPC shows only the LHD versions).

Other possibility is that the airbox near the bulkhead has a grommet at the bottom to let the water out. This gets full of dirt, preventing the evacuation of water through it and letting the water inside. To check this stick your finger (excuse my French) through the grommet to evacuate the water.

Cheers

Thanks Jesus but the water is definately coming out through the rubber which is about 75mm above the wipers and air intake. This car doesnt go fast enough to force the water back up in the windscreen area :P

Have you actually SEEN the water come in via the windscreen rubber? If not, get sat in the car in pouring rain(or let someone spray it with the garden hose) and look for where the water is getting in.
The leaking at the wiper spindles as pointed out above by J is well known on these vehicles and has been discussed extensively here.

Basically, I bought the car on Saturday and the guy had it washed before I got there.

When I saw it and for about 2 hours afterwards, there was a trickle of water coming out from the very bottom edge of the rubber seal just behind the instrument binacle. As it went on for so long, it must have collected a lot of water and presumably the water was getting in at the top and filling up the whole of the seal.

I know what your saying about the wipers but they are just too much lower than where the water is coming in.

I was wondering whether the horizontal rubber strip at the junction of the roof and the front screen panel was a possible source?

I think I will do the hose trick though in case it is just water that got in under the pressure of a jet wash and under normal circumstances, it is ok.
