Have just got my 89 280GE and bought it knowing that there was a petrol leak.

I now realise that there should be a cover plate to hold in place the petrol pump but this is missing. all around the opening in the tray for this cover plate is severely rusted as are the jubilee clips connecting to the pump.

I am looking at tackling this and wanted to know the following;

1. is it possible to drop the petrol tank tray without dismantling the tank and hoses just so I can have a look.

2. from this, I will know whether it is a tank repair/replacement or just hoses that need replacing. I want to replace the hose in anycase and would like to get this in advance. Is it just a standard section of hose or a Mercedes part, and if so, what is the part number?

Thanks for your help.

No, the tray supports the tank and it can be rather heavy depending on how much fuel you've got in it. I suggest that you empty it dry before attempting to work on it.

You would need to provide your VIN so that somebody with a working EPC -mine is not working at the moment- can look up the part.

In any event, if you intend to keep your G and save $$$ in running costs, I would suggest that you join the GWOA: http://www.gwoa.co.uk
