Vibrating after putting into 3rd gear. Please help ! !
I have been reading much of the vibrating posts put up but i think mine sounds diffrent.
I drive a 1990 230 GE
Gear changes are no problem everything seems to work okay but when changing up to 3rd or fouth if the revs arnt significantly high, then the car in 3rd 4th makes a vibrating noise a shuddering if you will. which you then have to eaither change down or drive through building up revs as they gain then shuddering stops.
This problem happens less if you give less gas as you change and also less downhill.
In speeds of anything above 45 mph no prolems in gears 3 or 4. But drop speed and then push the gas and the vibrating starts until the car gains enough speed and pulls through it.
Any one had similar experiance.
Thanks

Sounds as if it might just be your driving technique. The Merc engine tends to have its peak power and torque further up the rev range than some other off-roaders. Just hang on to the lower gears that little bit longer; don't make the engine labour in a high gear at lower road speeds.
Q
had the same trouble with my old 230 auto, I take it you have tried the usual things like the propshaft UJ's. If there is play in them using a labouring engine can cause it to exaggerate.
Another point is the engine mounts, this is a common thing that a lot of people over look. After I had cured the propshaft problem I had the same vibration 8 months later. If you stand on the passenger side with bonnet open put your hand on the rocker cover and see if you can push engine side to side with ease, if there is more play then you would expect then the engine mounts have had it. The rubber perishses with oil contamination and they dry and crumble. Its a bit of a job to do to replace them. Again when engine labours the engines torque is causing the movement to exaggerate. Thinking about it while I'm writing this I'm convinced its the engne mounts.
