Hello fellow g-owners!

Does anyone know what the engine temp should be in normal use? (350 TD). mine is quite stable in the range 85-90 degrees. Its climbing to 90 when driving in the city these days with extreme hot weather (outside temp 33 degrees Celsius).

thanks!

Hello Rollin,

Your engine temperature is a 'tad' high. Usually around 85 degrees is the norm. Your reading is a little high but, not seriously.

I suppose, the fact you are reading high is that your raditor is showing initial signs of being restricted.

Check your radiator, surface temperature with a cautious touch, and WITH THE ENGINE SWITCHED OFF and after that you have warmed the engine at its full and normal operating temperature.

When feeling the radiator surface, take note for any cool or cooler spots, ususally you should have an evenly warm to hot feel.

The cool spots indicate blockages in the radiator core.

Should this be the case, then you will need to the basic checks that your coolant level is correct, the thermostat is functing normally, and not sticking etc, etc...

your cure is a new radiator or a cheaper option is to have it re-cored. This can be done by your local radiator sepecialist.

cheers,

Re: Ideal engine temp?

Hi your 350TD has a reputation for heat problems by design and correct coolant temps are far more critical with this engine ...the radiator is prone to sediment accumulation in the lower tubes (from using tap water with a high lime content) or not using the chemical additive recommended by MB...a NEW radiator from MB is GBP 700+ but you can get one from NISSENS for GBP 330 made from aluminium...biggest problem will be removing the oil cooler hose fittings on the right hand side of the radiator because the nuts corrode onto the the metal pipes and refuse to rotate. this can fracture the pipes which are difficult to remove and expensive to replace.....90c is not serious but if the indicator climbs much beyond that under any circumstances (including prolonged idle) them major problems will result....better to be safe than sorry ......

Re: Ideal engine temp?

Hey guys! Thanks for you comments and advises!

When driving "normal" (to and from work) the temp is shiftingfrom 81 to 87 degrees. It can reach 89-90 when pushing hard uphill on the motorway but i try to avoid the motorway anyway.
I will defenitly make a "system check" of the cooling/radiator system.
I have notised that the aftercooling is not working. A pump used to circulate the coolingwater a couple of minutes after turning of the engine but it has in some way failed.

Best regards

RR

Hi Rollin get the aftercooling system operational sooner than later.as per my previous post.. this engine has builtin overheating problems and the resulting damage can be total engine failure....
