intercoolers
I was wondering if anybody has any pics of an intercooler mounted in a W460 OM617a and where they sourced the intercooler. I am trying to figure out the cleanest way to run the piping.

Sorry, no further useful photos of the plumbing.
Eddie.
my intercooler is off a 3.1 isuzu. it sits over the engine, but i was advised to fit it infront of the radiator :( i am happy with it however] but i should try using the G without the intercooler to compare.
btw, mine mounted on 606 td [w210 300td engine. THE bo@@ocks of an engine!!]
i also recently brought a 617a too, and plan on fitting it my new toy  not sure where will suit best. but i guess infront of the rad is best choice.
why dont you chime in to p3. warren T is THE man to ask about anything 617a. you could also ask mark vulture. he also runs a rhd G with a 617a.

I have a big intercooler in front of my rad....cant keep the engine cool on a long up hill with it :x
mick, you need a good qaulity PACET fan mate
as for the intercooler issue, i was once told that an intercooler is mainly benificial on long motorway trips and high speeds. sounds logical i guess.

have spun up a bush on the lathe to do away with the viscous (temporarily) to see if makes a difference.....then maybe a w203 elictric fan and shroud trimmed to fit
Hi,
I'm about to fit an intercooler to my 617, if you have any advise and photos you could share I'd be grateful. I'm thinking bottom of the rad is the obvious place, but will require some serious piping to get to the turbo and manifold inlet.
Cheers
I guess you are talking about an oil cooler?
Typically these are fitted below the radiator, but then the bumpers on those vehicle have slots to allow air to pass through.
If you really mean an intercooler for the turbo charge air, then some engines use an air-water type, fitted between engine and radiator (radiator has electric fan), or an air-air type.
Hi Arnie,
I do mean an intercooler, the 617 is turbo charged but since rebuilding the engine and turbo I removed the intercooler that was originally installed as it wasn't in an efficient place (side mounted to the inside wing and drawing air through a home made vent) Last week whilst driving home my oil warning light came on which I thought may be due to the high temperature air entering the inlet manifold directly from the turbo and dissipating the oil, I may be wrong but when I checked the oil level once cool it was showing the correct level so I know I'm not burning oil. I'll add some photos of the current set up when I get a chance but I think an intercooler will help cool things down. Any ideas would be helpful!
Iveco 2.8tdi intercooler fron a van should suit, just sits in front of rad, pretty straight forward job .
Arnie deffo not oil cooler for 617a
.
I see. I didn't know about the 'a'
looks like the one to get (MV pump, oil-squirters under pistons, sodium-filled valves, etc.
I have two friends with 617a transplants ( both from Scouse G ) both very successful and used as daily drivers.
Both have the intercooler mounted in front of the radiator with no cooling problems.
Mercedes c111 with 617a , sexiest prototype of the 70's !
