After reading the post about the Russian website, that will tell you where when and with what accesories your G came with i,ve discovered that my G has only 16 not 17 digits.
Any clues as to why ?

That simply cannot be!
Take the chassis number directly from the frame. It should be stamped on the chassis in the driver's side front wheel arch, right behind the front right wheel. Yours being a 280 GE, it whould read as follows:
SWB: WDB 460 232 27 XXXXXX
LWB: WDB 460 233 27 XXXXXX
Being XXXXXX the serial number

Apparently my car came with quite alot, wheres plant 61.

W must be the country code
DB stands for DaimlerBenz
wdb stands for wagen daimler benz as in car daimler benz.
