Hi!

A while ago i replaced the rad and the water pump and my girlfriends dad who helped said that eventually there will be more leaks as it puts strain on other old parts and sure enough there is haha!

Its around the area where the thermometer is where the gasket is but it must be badish as it requires two pint glasses to fill it back up again. Could radwell fix this?

And my auto gearbox i think it leaking as my gears have been a bit jerky so I checked and it was a bit low so I topped it up. My mechanic thinks it could be just a oil leak and the gasket needs replacing on i think the sump?

Hope you can help
Many thanks
Joe

Hello Gibson,

I am sorry to disagree with your father's comments regarding additional stress to the coolant system after your radiator replacement; on the contrary, the system is relieved of additional stress due to freely flowing coolant.

You have not stated at what rate you need to top up your coolant, should it be at a daily to weekly rate, I would say it is too much and definately not suggest radwell. Effect a proper repair to your leak.

Should you have the urge to use radwell; personnally, it would not be my product choice, radwell in my opinion, can cause blockages in radiator cores. Instead, I would choose a liquid suspended radiator solution, to act, as a sealant. Such, a product is availbe through Wynn's oil additives or Forte product.

The manner in which the sealant works here, is tiny fibre fragments ususally suspended in soloution, remain in that state, untill the leak out from where ever. Exposure to the atmoshpere causes the tiny fibres to solidify and effect a seal.

Leaving the fibres in the coolant in a suspended form, hence not causing a blockage potentionally in the radiator core.

The automatic leak of course needs to be sorted or regularly, keep checking the oil level and top up as necessary.

More common areas of leak on a/boxes are: the modulator valve, speedo bung, oil pan seal or kick down switch. The more expensive leaks tend to be rear prop. shaft seal, front torque convertor seal.

Cheers,

Gibson

To an extent there is, but for different purposes.  There are seal restorers available, which are designed to make the seals supple again. thus restoring any leakage.  However, these work well if the seal leakage is due to a hardened seal, but if the is some damage on the seal, it makes the condition worse, there is a greater chance of the leak becoming worse.  This product does not work for pan gasket leakage.

You are better of renewing the gasket.

Re: Two Leaks! One From Water and one from Automatic fluid??

Hey again!!!

right i havent a clue where its coming from but its oily around the (looking at it from the front) middle and slightly to the left. It seems to be the same on both our Mercs in the same area. Also where would I get a gasket from for the auto gearbox as the gearbox oil (the one you fill up under the car???) keeps being lost and the gear changes become erratic.

Thanks alot for all your help

Joe

Other than an oil pan seal, all others are a dealer item only.  The pan seal and oil can be got from motor factors or Euro car parts.

There are two likely areas, oil leaks could occur from, given your description that the oil leak is at the left side of the vehicle.
One, is from the kickdown solenoid (off-side, front of g/box), or the dip stick tube seal.
