Hi all,
I purchased an old 230GE a couple of weeks ago and am looking forward to getting out on the tracks for a bit of offroading and camping. There are very few G-Wagens over here (less than 200 for a population of 21 million) although the Australian army are buying 1200 W461's.

We have a lot of places to go in South East Queensland including islands off the coast like Fraser Island, North Stradbroke Island and Moreton Island. Its a real buzz getting the car ferries over and then dropped off right on the beach - 4wd's only! There are also a number of dedicated (private) camping places with tracks for some challenging 4wd'ing. Also National Parks with many hundreds of kilometers of forest trails.

This is my 5th 4wd after owning a Toyota Hilux, Nissan GQ Patrol SWB (with Toyota V8!) Nissan GU Patrol wagon and Suzuki Grand Vitara.

My biggest trip so far was up to the tip of Queensland - "Cape York" which is one of the must-do trips over here. About 5000km.

Here are some pics of the 230GE:

Re: G'day from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Thanks for the welcome.
I have joined the Australian forum and have had some good advise from them. Quite a learning curve for me as its my first "euro" vehicle.
I purchased it for $AU16,000 (9700 pounds) which is a lot looking at English prices. But there are very few over here so they demand a premium. I get a lot of looks as many people have never seen one. It was not a local Mercedes delivered one but came in from Japan 2 owners before me. There are a few coming in from Japan because they must be RHD and being up to 1989 (no later than this allowed unless its a private import, which has been owned and used overseas for more than 12 months) So if any of you English fellows want to migrate - bring your G with you!

Not sure what a GES is - mine is a GE, 1988, 125,000km.

I have some work to do with the usual problems - rust under the rear left light, rust in the rear rub rails, auto suggish to reverse when cold. I am going to chop up the factory tow hitch and weld in a 2" receiver which will not sit so low and provide a better recovery point. I have a problem with the air conditioning fan being on all the time, even with no A/C selected and the engine cold. Its a noisy bugger. Also I will replace the ignition leads (not original) distributer cap and rotor and maybe new injectors - it does not have a clear serice history. I will replace all fluids soon. Also looking for a bullbar (or more accurately a "roobar" to help protect us from our big marsupials) and I hope to make up some rock sliders/side steps.

Hi very nice looking G' if it is a factory fitted aircon I can help you with the fan problem...to find out put the vin number onto the Russian website in the general technical section of the forum and all will be revealed... the reverse gear problem could be caused by contaminated oil / dirty filter or low oil level....looking at the brown marks (Rusty streaks) on the side carpet in the passenger footwell it appears to have suffered from worn wiper spindles at some time which allows rain/wash water into the footwells ....health to enjoy....

G = G class
E = Petrol
S = SWB

Good luck with it, it looks very nice.
