pain gear change

My ol'gal is becomming increasing difficult to change gear, when i pump the clutch or double clutch, the ol'lass is ok. I checked the system for air, leaks etc, & all is well. Infact i bled the whole system thru. Occasionally she sticks in gear, & with a good left hook, she sorts her self.

Could it be
1- master cylinder
2-pressure plate
3-linkage bushes

4- all of the above :lol:

or slave cylinder. Neither slave or master cylinder are that expensive. The fact you can change gear by double declutching suggests to me its one or the other of these, anyone else have a different view?

My manual was getting heavy to change gear and just 'sticking', and it turned out to be missing a good bit of grease on the linkage just under the rubber gaiter.
But this doesn't sound like your problem.
Pumping the clutch sounds like air in the hydraulics (I actually thought my 460 was a cable clutch!)

Hi Could be any or all of the three plus wrong or low oil (ATF) is the correct oil...start with the rubber bushes the cheapest option GBP25 + vat for the set...lack of lube around the lever slide bar and plunger can tighten things up....adjusting the stroke on the pedal to master cylinder travel can help if the point of release is close to the floor

Hello Bushcraft,

You have not provided enough information to conduct any accurate prognosis.

Anyhow, assuming you have a good clutch pedal pressure and travel, my initial start point would be to check and correct the gearbox oil level. If, you find engaging either of these combinations or collective gears difficult, between, reverse -1st - 2nd and 4th – 5th gears, then turn your attentions to the gear selector bushes.

Compare the gear selection with a running engine and with engine switched off, you should find the select smoother or easier when engine is switched off. Should the selection be equally difficult with/without the engine running, you should be looking at possibly lubricating the gear selector mechanism. Ohh, as I am drafting this response to you, before getting carried away, should your gear selection difficulty have arisen a few days after doing some off-roading, it is worthwhile jetting off any caked-on mud on the selectors.

Your other consideration is, at what point in depressing your clutch pedal, does the clutch bite; if the bite occurs higher up (more than half way of pedal travel) then it is a first indication that your clutch is due or will be due for renewal. Other conditions could apply here, if the clutch drags due to possible oil contamination it could give similar result as your complaint. Suggest in this case burning the clutch a little by slipping the clutch purposefully for a brief moment. Oil burn off may improve gear selection. It is not always necessary to experience clutch slip under normal driving conditions to learn your clutch is on its way out; these can suddenly fail with no drive or cause damage to the flywheel surface.
Pumping the clutch system to achieve gear selection is an indication of weak seals in either the clutch cylinder or master cylinder. It can be difficult to bleed the system; ideally this should be done by pressure bleeding the system or by vacuum bleeding.
Assuming all of above is serviceable, then, the problem could lay within the gearbox its self.

The gear selector bulk rings are wearing.

Hope it is not the latter. You might consider changing your oil to ATF oil instead of the mineral oil, if fitted.

Thank you chaps. As said , cheep solution 1st- the bushes in the linkage, then ATF oil, then adjust the pedal to master cylinder, then bleed again.
