I would say oil would be the cause of your white smoke. Possibly your valve stem oil seals are weaping oil into the cylinder overnight.

Re: diesel mechanics

Hi If this happens only at the first start of the day chances are that it is faulty heater plugs.does the orange light go out in less than three seconds? does it remain on after starting? is the engine hard to start first time? and lumpy..any back pressure from the oil filler cap when hot?..could be contaminated diesel....valve guide seals would give you blue smoke on the over run when hot. and at first start but would not continue to smoke for half a mile....are you using synthetic or semi synthetic oil?.....10W40 mineral based oil should be used in these old engines and not overfull as these engines can run on the engine oil..with high revs and lots of smoke....

magtec oil & doent burn any ,as i never have to top her, & the orange light is as normal & with no back pressure at the filler cap. Tick over is fine, its just the initial start up, & set off for 100yds down the road, lots of white smoke..clouds infact ..

I never changed the glow plugs, in the 3 poss 4 yrs i had her now & she is a little lump !! glow plugs mmmmm.

Re: diesel mechanics

Hi MMmm it would appear to be heater plugs = slow to start and the lumpy until the smoke clears..then good for the rest of the day ( in this ambient temp') if you plan to change them yourself do it with the engine hot....and with the correct deep socket and ratchet bar...it is very easy to break one off flush with the head because they have been installed a long time and can get carboned up in the combustion chamber when they have not been heating electrically....the smoke is from the excess unburnt diesel. which can wash down the cylinder bores and contaminate the engine oil.....
