hi gents i have just purchased on line a recon starter for my 460 GD (manual) the bit turned up and it appears to be a oem part complete with merc star stamped on it not bad for £40 delivered. Now has any body any tips on how to gain access to the top securing allen key headed bolt, the lower one is ok with a long extension bar but the upper one may cause a few headaches, i don't really want to remove shafts and exhaust if i don't have to, any tricks or advice would be greatly appreciated, it might have to wait until the spring as i have a foot of snow on the drive right now. many thanks in advance Lynxman.

I changed it on a ge280 5 years back and its fiddly but possible with the right tools, there is little room to work in but you have to accept that with only tiny turns it will take a lot of time. I did not need to remove the exhaust, good luck.

ordered one from prestolite...just awaiting it's arrival.
just hope it works properly.

had loads of problems trying to get the origonal motor refurbed around the leeds and bradford areas, but apparantly non of the specialists around here could get the bits with which to refurb it.

when I finally got a second hand motor...it didn't work.

will let you know how i get on with this one.

thanks

it's arrived and have to say it looks like brand new.

the company that supplied it is... westwood cylinder liners ltd.

it is more or less identical apart from some very minor difference in the casting impressions and the solanoid.

it's a bosch, but doesn't have 'made in germany' stamped on the body as does the origonal.

i will know if it works or not...tomorrow.

i'm optomistic because it has a quality assurance mark, so i ssume it's been tested.

no worries thats what the forums all about i assume that yours is a 460 gd like mine, did getting the top 10mm allen keyed bolt out give you much grief? i asked the question and the audience went quite!!! best regards Lynxman.

it's a 1989 300 GD LWB 5 cyl diesel.
and i didn't fit the starter... done by jason at prestige car care, independant merc specialist. working out of a little industrial unit on a local trading estate in bradford.

i've just phoned him and asked how he did it.

the bolts are removed from under the car and the electrics are disconnected by approaching from under the bonnet.

it's all about having the right tool for the job...
ingredients= alan key headed socket onto a, swivel socket, onto a half meter long socket extention bar, onto a ratchet....
method=stand some distance back manipulate the alan key head onto the bolt the swivel socket allows the bolt to be removed from an angular position and not full on at 90 degrees.aparantly it's easy.
