Taking a G Wagen to Iceland
Hi,
It looks like I'll be working on a project in Iceland for two months early next year. I'll be taking the 230GE over there.
A couple of questions for the forum...
Has any one on the forum been to Iceland?
I currently have 31x10.5x15 mud terrain pattern tyres fitted. In snow should I use these on their own or should I add snow chains?
So far my experience of driving in snow is limited to the rare odd days we get in the UK. It looks like I'm going to get a lot of practice!!!
There is a very knowledgeable Icelandic member of the US GWagen BenzWorld internet forum who I am sure will be delighted to answer your questions. His name is Karl Ingolfsson and his profile is here:

but perhaps you cannot access it without becoming a member of the US forum first?

Please do join the Benzworld forum. As a preview of the advice Karl might have for you, here is the signature at the end of each of his posts:
I ride LWB 1984 300GD on 35"x12,5"/16" tires mounted on 9,5" (widened 5,5") G rims
NO LIFT, -fenders cut to fit tires.
Gearbox 711.116. (1st=1/6,17 and 5th=1/1)
Original 1/4,88 final ratio
This is underpowered but practical setup.
Steering, -without shock absorber, is vibration free and uneventful.
Thanks for the information. I'll join the BenzWorld forum to find out more.
I've been looking at all the Icelandic websites I can find especially http://www.f4x4.is. If I get the work I want to make sure that the work doesn't stop if it snows. It looks like the Icelanders go for the "Superjeep" with larger, wider tyres. I don't know if I need to go that far but i'll try and find out.
