Hi All

I am looking for some advice regarding my glow plug relay on my 1986 300GD G-Wagen.

Currently my glow plug light does not come on when ignition is on or when the engine is running.

As the engine was starting ok my first check was the dash bulb, this was fine.

Next I checked all of the glow plugs to see if any were faulty. They old seemed ok but to be safe I have replaced them all with new ones.

Still no light....

Next I checked that the plug leads were ok, these were all fine.

With the ignition on I then checked power to each of the plugs.... all the plugs were getting power and heating up.

Then with the engine running I disconnected the socket which connects the plugs wires to the relay. When testing the relay pins it showed the relay was still live with the engine running (hence why my battery has been draining rather quick recently!!)

So I took the relay off to have a sneaky peek inside, see picture below, and the only thing I could see that was wrong was that some of the ceramic/plastic shroud had crumbled away (I have ringed where in red). After a clean up of the points and a dust off I put it back together and connected it back up. I then tried the ignition on again (still no light) and now the relay clicks on for only half a second and then shuts off again.

Any ideas would be much appreciated

Thanks

Alex

Re: Glow Plug Relay

the timing management is very delicate and can be damaged with good intent! cleaning with an abrasive could have changed the balance hence the short cycle....the light contact is made in the same circuit as the heat cycle...look at where you cleaned and maybe try to get the tension back on the contact strip ...if not...then it is a new relay......

Cheers for the reply!

When you say try and get the tention back on the top strip, are you refering to setting the gap at the points?

Re: Glow Plug Relay

I have spent the afternoon playing around with the relay....

I tried adjusting and tweaking the points but still no luck, it just pings on and off when the ingition is turned.

Apart from it being completly dead (the most likley problem) the only other issue I can see is that the relay under the dash.... as this too clicks on and off at the same time as the glow plug relay.....

hmmmmm lol

cheers
