Re: Newbie Say Good evening

Way too impatient for that.
Need a G in my life.
Had Range Rovers X5s XC90.
Trying to put off the madness but I can't stop the urge now!

G500
or
G400?

Re: Newbie Say Good evening

How is the performance of the 500?
Comparred to let's say the 4.6 in the P38?

I like the oddity of the 400, but am leaning to the Petrol.

Re: Newbie Say Good evening

welcome to the forum.

Spider on here will tell you all about the 500, from what i have experienced in the passenger seat, its much faster.

the 400 is left hand drive only but i do see where the v8 cdi seems appealing.

sure many more will answer you but good luck in the hunt

Personally I wouldn't touch a 2001 G400. It was the first year they put that engine in a G and they reputedly had a lot of problems with it.... the G500 will likely be more reliable...

Re: Newbie Say Good evening

Hi and Welcome.

Just a few questions if I may?

Will you be off roading it?
Using it on a daily basis?
Have deep pockets?!

Basically put - G500.

For -
Good comfort
Nice additions (all the V8 Badges. lit door )
GREAT noise
For a G - very good performance
LWB - much more practical and nicer drive (Sorry all you SWB 500's  )

Against-

Fuel consumption
Fuel consumption
Fuel consumption (you get the message)

Advice would be to make sure you have a FMBSH. Check the Kats, spindles Washer wiper motor thingy, rear door hinges and springs.

Have now had my 500 for a few years and frankly can't find any other G/Car that will address my requirements - Rufty Tufty, go anywhere, any time, any place, practical family car, that sounds great, is unique and the chances are if you see another one you will know its owner through the club! You should Drop Goochie a message he has a LWB G400 (featured in the Mercedes Enthusiast Mag a few months back) But heed Maxwell Smarts warning - he knows these things!

Hope this helps

Re: Newbie Say Good evening

Thank you Spider.

Yes to off road mianly shooting, so not big holes etc. But I need to get there in one piece.

G500 appeals for your reasons given.
The one I am keen on is Gas already.
The same system as my P38 had on it, Prins so shouldn't be a problem there?

I really don't want to walk down the same road as on my P38 with £1000 a month on repairs, SWMBO would kill me.

My present car is Fine just dull dull dull dull dull.

I need to drive both I think?

I would get a G500 if i were you, or a 1993 500GE if you want to save about 40% on the initial cost.

Re: Newbie Say Good evening

Pok's right, go for an earlier 500ge remember all Mercs became garbage after 1995. Mainly electrical but also some build quality issues, G's least affected by this but beware nevertheless. Don't rule out the 6 cylinder cars, much smoother and noticeably more economical.

Re: Newbie Say Good evening

I like that G.

So (bear with me) If I want to import that G what do I do.
Yes I have to pay Autorista Autohaus GmbH E14980.

After that what is the process?

What duty am I liable for?

Or do I change the lights and get it MOT'd?

Keen to look at this option.

Re: Newbie Say Good evening

I am not too sure about importing it to the UK, however I could tell you as much as I know about buying a car in Germany.

It's in Berlin... maybe you can fly with ryanair from East Midlands to Berlin Schönefeld to have a look at it. If you like it, call your bank and transfer them the money or pay them with cash. Not that many German car dealers take cards.

After the fund is cleared, they will give you the registration documents, then you will have to go to the local Verkehrsambt to deregister your car from Germany, . You will need to buy a pair of 'export plates for €150, which valids for 14 days.' <-- quote from easydeluxe.

The Verkehrsambts have relatively short opening hours, so check before going!!

Don't think you will have to pay import duty or VAT since both GB and DE are in the EU

All good news so far,

Is it as simple as MOT/registration or is an SVA involved?

Shirely it can't be that simple?

MOT and register, thats it. You may have to change headlights and speedo for the registration process.

Re: Newbie Say Good evening

MOT aren't interested in the speedo, the registration people are. To be 100% legal you need to show MPH. You can't use the Sat Nav speed either.
Stickers on the speedo may be acceptable if they are durable and can be seen at night. In reality, no one checks, you just have to write a declaration.

Late entry here - get a 500 swb in black, grey leather - bees knees. Every time u think about the petrol, just wind window down and boot it. Ask Spider, as long as you ignore the LWB bias. Ask Claire instead.

The 500GE drinks fuel alot faster than a newer G500. And have 50hp and 1 gear less.

That's settled then. You will always get more advice than u bargain for on this forum - but all completely unbiased towards "late" 500s

Onelab, big smile despite hole in pocket, roof, shoes, maybe head ??

Re: Newbie Say Good evening

the earlier 500ge may well be marginally thirstier but its simpler to maintain and has less electrical wizardry that will inevitably go wrong, plus the hugh cash saving is more significant than the economy which is marginal.

I really want the one in that link... saw it in real life last month, but the fuel consumption figures stopped me from buying it. The fuel consumption of the 300GE was quite enough for me :'(

work it out on an annualised mileage basis, it will cost a couple of hundred euro more, the real losses are depreciation.

Nah... it might be the case in the UK but definitely not in Germany. Diesel here is €1.079/L, however petrol (I used to always use V-power petrol) is €1.539 :/

Re: Newbie Say Good evening

G400 or G500?

No brainer G500 every time IF it’s an early one. IMHO it could be argued that these were the pinnacle of G evolution. The PUR maybe the one to replace it, time will tell.

As prwales points out it’s well known and documented that MB lost the plot post 95 (oh could that be connected to Chryslers input!?). Lets chuck ever more value in to our vehicles which actually means poor quality electronics with cents shaved off the price per unit whilst charging the gullible Joe Public ever more. A proven model actually, which has demonstrated how easy it is in the USA to destroy your indigenous producers.
It would appear MB have figured this and are now actually removing some of this complexity whilst upping the quality.

So, call me a muppet, but a 1998 G500 should be discounted?

Has an earlier G got the toys?

Where can I see specs and performance for differing models??

I think the 1998 G500(296PS) is already discontinued... replaced by the 5.5L 388PS version.

Take a look at the chart near the bottom of the page.

1998 could be OK, the history will tell you lots (assuming it exists) I think G’s started to suffer from the MB malaise around 99/2000 actually.

You should be trying to avoid the toys

At the end of the day we all have difference priorities and tolerances. Me, I just have zero tolerance for expensive problems which I can not figure out for myself and have little use for toys beyond ABS and cruise control :)
