Come tech dudes. Why does my 230 have to whine like a cat caught in garbage cruncher. It doesn't really bother me, but everyone knows its me coming - "I heard the whine going past my house at 1130 last night where were you going at that time". Yeah it deprives me of inconsciptiousness (if theres such a word).

There's no play in the chain, I'm using synthetic oil, and Molyslip. It was treated with slick 50 last change, and is changed evry 1500 miles, as are the filters - a habit borne of years of experience with tuned engines in bikes.

My diesel Merc car doesn't whine at all, and it has a chain too (boo hoo). (it has a distinctive chug though!). Obviously theres friction where there's noise, but where's the bloomin friction? God knows what It'd be like with the noise absorbtion padding taken out.

 Maybe a should put a loud silencer on so I can't hear it?

You are not talking about the squeal of a slipping fan belt are you?
I'm not sure what would cause a whine. Is it engine rev related or speed related?
