Any you deisel mechanics , sort this one out here...

I have a bud who runs a old diatshu & a trooper, the milages on the clock are 200k +, for the mot & fuel emissions he drops in the tank approx 1 gal of unleaded to 5 gals of deisel !!

He recons it improves the emmissions ,by cleaning the injectors & emission burn factor etc

Any comments on this ?

Re: petrol in diesel !!

Hi the petrol helps to burn off the residual unburnt diesel per compression stroke.. we would add Jet A1 fuel to reduce noxious fumes and stop the diesel freezing in the winter.....not so good in common rail engines....

Re: petrol in diesel !!

I know a few guys that do this before a test on vehicles with no emission problems!
seems a bit silly to me, if the vehicle did fail in most cases its far better to use a proper fuel additive or injector cleaner, try and fix the problem rather than just trying to mask it by putting some petrol in the tank!

@ fixwin38, have I heard correct that jet A1 is kerosene?

Re: petrol in diesel !!

We add petrol to diesel often at work to get cars to pass the smoke test. They say it cleans the injectors and fuel system but it doesn't. Petrol is just a cleaner fuel and burns completely at the heat inside a diesel engine. The smoke is from unburnt diesel. Petrol has no lubricating qualities tho so only do it when needed.
