Epic Fail
So I am getting a 'B service' and an MOT done.
The MOT failed on two points - one the number spacing on the registration plate - It was pointed out that the same place passed the same registration plate last year
Point two - Emissions it was initially 3% over the posted acceptable MOT limit for a car like mine, It came back Mercedes fiddled and then it failed again as it was now 1.5%.
Mercedes will be looking at it tomorrow.
Anybody out there any ideas why (a fully MB regular serviced) a car can suddenly go from being OK to not OK?
Many thanks

Typical main agent ! trying to pull the wool over customers eyes ! at over £120 per hr .
could be an engine management system failure, all post 95' cars have dodgy electrics don't they! Whereas the older cars have good old mechanical K-jet, a 70 years old design and still going strong
Though more seriously it could be a major engine fault, like bore wear or valve seat erosion
Emissions is quite unusual as it is all electronically-controlled, pity you don't have a 300GE where you just turn a screw and voila ;) your idle CO is adjusted
Might be something to do with emissions control (lambda sensor, fuel vapour/charcoal canister thing), for more info please visit:

Hi Joe, it could be your catalysts, done any off roading lately, with your new tyres? Been getting some practice in for Bala on the QT. Seriously though if you have banged them about this could be the fault.

Or thermal shock I.E. get them hot and then hit a big puddle at speed. This will kill them
has the MOT checked your airbags, these are only warranted for 10 years, there after its best to replace them as your insurance could bounce your policy in the event of an accident.
Hi spider,
Exactly which emmission category is off by 1.5%, is it the CO2, NOx/SOx or particulate. If it is CO2, then it could be your lambda sensor (although the MB guy should have been able to check this on the analyser machine), if it is the NOx/SOx then your catalysts might not be doing the job properly and particulate shouldn't really be an issue with petrol cars. What year is your 500, is it pre 2000? (does it have the W140 engine? - this is a very good unit and I'd suggest you go to the MB agent to ask them what they think the problem is as you've obviously got a good relationship with them. Things don't usually go wrong with these as far as I'm aware - at least I hope not as I've got one too!!!).
Hope that helps/ph
Actually I would normally agree with you, however they do pass on the 10% on parts and 20% on labour and the MB owners discount on top. The guy who services my car has been doing so for the past 15 years and we go out for regular beers and meals and, to date I have been happy with both the prices and service I have had from MB Brooklands.
Anyone else I would wholeheartedly agree with you - but in this case I can't.
