New Member with 1988 diesel G wagon
Hi everyone. I have just bought a 1988 diesel G wagon that looked in mostly good order. However there are some problems:-
Clock not working.
Rev counter works sometimes usually after swinging about madly and the settles down.
There is a leak that drips down from the heater onto left hand side of the plastic casing used for putting bits and pieces in. I do not seem to be losing water from the radiator. The hole in the box under the bonnet is clear with no standing water.
The only other thing is that the pulling power is less than I expected with 65 mph on a straight dropping quickly on any incline. Towing around one and three quarter tons from a start on a hill induced panic when it looked that it would not even pull away.
Your wiper spindles are leaking if it's dripping where you say, looks a nice car though.
looks nice - regarding the power and cruising speed - you are dead right - thats what to expect
A clean looking '88
Ps
What is this "speed" ?
i understand it is an illegal substance
good luck

Look on this forum and all those symptoms are classics (except maybe the clock - get a new one!)
The spindles are the painful part to get to... its amazing how a little rain just gets 'sucked' down those things - I am going to try putting a blob of grease around mine (under the plastic spindle cover).
Hi welcome to GWOA !! looks very tidy...your water problem nost likely to be worn wiper spindles the passenger side wears first.lift the wiper arm off the screen and waggle the shaft the arm it is attached to ( not from side side... up and down..any play at all and there's your leak. the water sits in the hollow under the spindle and the slipstream blows collected water into the car..if the seal behind the large nut that holds the spindle body in the metal surround is hard it will leak ..if the nut is loose against the seal it will leak.if the spindle is siezed in its housing you have no option but to change the spindle assembly ****now only available from MB in kit form with both spindles and actuating arms for GBP 110 plus vat...before you instal new spindles remove the circlip and seal.. draw out the spindle and pack the body with a good quality grease..if the black plastic covers are cracked get new ones and pack them with grease before fitting ..the rev counter fault is probably the transducer mounted under a black screw cap half way along the edge of the nearside wing close to where the bonnet stay is clipped ..try sprayng it with switchcleaner .the clock could be disconnected if the G' has been seldom used ---to save the battery !!!!???
Hi and welcome!
Very tidy G you have there. Hope you manage to sort out the problems soon. Vast bank of experience here on the forum. Look forward to meeting you at one of the events sometime soon!

Console yourself with running her on straight vegetable oil.
nıce G. the pump can be tweaked for more power! but dont expect miracles from that engine. i gave up years ago... :P
was this the G that was up for a figures last year? it was on here at one time. i know i have seen it somewhere before...
btw, welcome to proper 4x4 ownership
Hi please read you private mail (PM)
Welcome to g ownership to help with the lack of power when pulling on steep hills use low to start and shift on the fly to high ratio this will save your clutch and any embarssmwnt :D
Good to see another G making its way to the westcountry (or was it hear already?). Wiper spindles and the diesels lack of oompf are common complaints! You'll grow to love it though I'm sure.
Mine's the Glastonbury one I expect (Black 460, reg DEZ ...) ...unless there's another I don't know about. There's an almandine red 463 in Wells and a bright red 460 that I see every now and then parked in the Clarks Village car park. We must have a south west get together. Apparently there's a pay and play off road place near Othery.
I got the alignment done on mine at Avalon after I overhauled the steering system. Otherwise it goes to Rapsons. I have zero off road experience too, that's why we need a few other GWOA members there to help us out. This is mine.
Not sure what's going on with the multiple attachments. It seems to be many or none atm.
¿460 with a sunroof? ¡i have never seen one before!

It's even electric! I think quite afew of the late ones have them. MB were using up all the extra bits they had for 460's before the 463's came in.
I deleted the multiple photos, but seem to have taken the lot, sorry. Try posting one again
Probably a good idea, it's treachorous enough on the roads round here at the moment!
I think rapson's are a great outfit but I know them personally as well so I may be a little biased. Their rates are pretty reasonable I think and they don't make you pay for the work straight away which helps sometimes. Plus they now have a little knowledge of G-wagens having looked after two of mine. They aren't big fans of mercs though
By the way, just saw a white 460 300GDS parked in Glastonbury High Street. Never seen it before. Anyone you know?
Hi Grecian please read your PM......
That was impressive I only posted it last night. Wiper spindles are the last thing I would have thought of but now I have been told it fits with other problems with water penetration I have come across over the years. I will have a good look at the transducer and try switch cleaner.
I got the G wagon because it is substantially more stronger built against Range Rovers I have had. I went for the diesel for better fuel consumption. Is there any timing tweaks or adjustments that will give it more power as it struggles to pull going uphill with a load?
