Hi all

I am deep in thoughts as into which diesel engine I shall swap into a 300GE

Basically diesel in Cyprus (where I m from) is relatively cheap compared to petrol so it seems as a logical thing to do.

So is it better to go for a W124 E300D or for W210 E300 Turbodiesel

Also will the gearbox be a straight swap ?

Thanks

Andronikos

Hi Andronikos why not buy a 463series 300GD in the first place.the conversion involves a lot more than just swopping engines.like fuel tank plumbing heater plug circuit wiring. vacuum system for engine shut down.and wiring for the electronic fuel management if you choose a later engine....

Re: 300GE LWB into which diesel ??

hi there andronikos. i am also from cyprus [north] and had my 460 cabrio converted from 230 ge to a 603 diesel 2 years ago AND HAD NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.

infact i went the full monty this year and fitted a 606 MULTI VALVE TURBO DIESEL from a 2000 model E300D. it is running fantastic and if it was 463 it would run even better i am sure. a few minor mods are to be done like intercooler and re positioning the turbo intake pipe like on the 250 td's like the one fitted to guido's yellow cabrio.

i am not sure where and why fixwin gives you this false/confusing info [........ ...... ] but i would be quite happy to meet up and discuss this conversion with you over a turkish/greek/cyprus coffee

i was at mercedes benz kamiakli today and hope to cross over again next week in my cabrio so alexis at mercedes can see the conversion carried out.

the only main obstacle was the electronic fuel pump on the 606. well it wasnt really because my mechanic removed the one off my 603 engine, overhauled it and fitted it onto tho 606  8)

almost anything is possible in cyprus as you know :D

my G now goes up the kyrenia pass in 4th gear [which it never did even when it was a 230 ge] and returns 25-27 mpg regularly.

rgds hus55.

ps, feel free to pm me if needed. theres alot to discuss.

Hi. Very interested in the conversion you made here. Did the engine mate up with the 460 gearbox? What did you need from the donor vehicle and what other bits were needed for the conversion? Sounds a really good job.

Re: 300GE LWB into which diesel ??

hi sharpham. the conversion wasnt too much of a problem. obviously labour costs are very high in the uk

engine mounts were used from the w124, but i will be changing them to those fitted to th G300 td, apparently the saloon mounts are for saloons !! not advised for off road use, which makes sense

gearbox was originally the 4 speed as fitted to my cabrio when it was a 230GE. it was ok, but the gear ratios seemed a bit high with no go....

so a few months back by brother gave me w124 5 speed which suited the the engine much better. this is a good setup if you are going to use standard tires.....unlike me  i have ordered a set of 37x12.50x15 maxxis creepy crawlers. so i will be changing the gearbox was i sort out the diffs 8) the main issue is the sump on the 606 saloon engine fouls the front diff, so you either need the sump off the G300 td OR YOU NEED A BLOODY GOOD FABRICATOR TO RE SHAPE THE SUMP. markvulture may be able to help you there. ahh,,, but i think you will struggle with your conversion if your G is a rhd. my cabrio is a lhd, and the turbo is on the stering side of a uk spec g
good luck !

Re: 300GE LWB into which diesel ??

Sound a really exciting venture. I would try to do a lot of the work myself with help from my son when his work is a bit sparse. The only worry is that the G would be off the road for a long time while I tried to get round some of the inevitable problems that would arise. I really enjoy driving it around much more that the Range Rover I had. I cannot quite understand why as the 1988 diesel is slow and noisy in comparison. The gearbox is strange having large travel from one gear to another. But I get withdrawal symptoms when I cant drive it. Might have to get another one to do the changes on when money is there. :)

Great. Cannot wait to hear how you get on. Thinking about it you are really lucky. If you were trying to do it here at the moment you would have temperatures down to -5 degrees one day and pouring down with rain the next. I really envy you.

Re: 300GE LWB into which diesel ??

Hello-

I sourced an OM603 for my 81' 280GE LWB this month and am planning the swap in a few weeks, but have been trying to figure out what to do about the oil pan. I've looked into getting the oil pan from a 350GD but it about $1000. I thought about creating a plate to cover the hole where the little side pan goes but am worried about the missed oil capacity. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Craig

Hi is your 81 G' stick shift on a 4 speed G'box?...and is your OM603 engine from a automatic G'box host vehicle?

Yes my 81' is a 4 speed manual. The engine came out of an 87 300sdl auto gear box. I am putting on a 5 speed manual out of a 190e 2.6. Thanks for your help.

Re: 300GE LWB into which diesel ??

I apologise both for hijacking this thread and for sticking a Mercedes engine into possibly the G Wagen's arch enemy, a Land Rover, but...

My 1994 Discovery now had a Mercedes 603 diesel engine sitting in it. This is (I think) the 3 litre, 6 cylinder diesel, from the w124 saloon.

I believe I have the same problem that occurs when you drop this engine into the G Wagen - the sump is very deep right at the front of the engine, exactly where you need clearance for the front axle and diff.

I'm guessing that the G wagen sump has the deeper part of the oil pan at the rear of the engine? As above, I've also heard G wagen specific sumps are expensive - but why?!

I know the sump is an alloy casting, but surely it can be replaced with a fabricated steel version? Or does the alloy sump have a structural role in the 603?

Other than that, it's down to sacrificing articulation with extended bump stops; or lifting the vehicle and sacrificing on road decorum. Neither particularly appeals.

Any ideas?

And, yes, I know it would be easier just to buy a G Wagen...
