lets go backwards !
any info/advice please
my "G" 1992 463 300GEL auto, has developed a dislike for reversing
all forward moves are OK, gear changes OK, but in reverse sometimes
it won't, there is an impression that it wants to, a pulsing feeling, and if
you get out and give it a one handed push, it goes quite easily, and then
seems to get up steam and reverses, it also seems the more resistance
ie incline it needs to reverse into, the worse the problem. my local garage
who service the car has checked the auto fluid all OK there.
so, if anyone has had a similar experience or has advice, please let me know
thanks and regards TonyW :?
check the adjustment of the gear linkeage by edging the lever in and out of the reverse gear detent..contaminated/old ATF oil foams causing cavitation. sediment can block the filter and restrict the oil flow...the correct oil level is critical..this is checked with the oil hot. engine running and gear lever in "park"...is the kickdown responding correctly? check for vacuum leaks...does the engine switch of on the key every time? a few pointers to start with!!
Firstly I’m not expert on autoboxes but the symptoms you describe maybe the warning signs that a rebuild is required in the near future.
However I would try the following 1st (or 2nd after fixwin38's items above):
Get yourself a new filter and pan seal from MB. Not silly money, from memory around £20.
Drain the existing fluid, including the torque convertor (just draining the gearbox leaves fluid in the torque convertor). If it smells burnt and is a murky brown colour that’s bad news.
Change the filter.
Renew fluid with some cheapo stuff.
Run it for maybe 5 – 10 miles, drain and replace with some good quality ATF.
If that fails try some Wynns or Lucas seal conditioner. It’s not snake oil it softens the seals and may sort your problem.
NOTE. If you do this yourself cleanliness is CRUTIAL, one bit of grit and you’ll definitely be looking at a big bill.
If the above fails you need to find a recommended autobox reconditioner. They are pretty simple boxes so don’t fall for the long intake of breath and the “oh it’s a Mercedes†junk.
Good luck.
hi to you both, and thanks for the advices, will advise results later
thanks for quick responses too, regards TonyW
