Mine needs one. I checked with merc and there's no 'kit' for bushes, linkages etc. I don't want the G to be off the road for too long if possible so thought it best to order up the bits that normally want changing first....but... I don't know what they are. Can anyone (Fixwin!) identify what to get ordered up i.e. what the 'consumable' parts are from the attachment. If anything else needs doing once I get it all opened up so be it. Thanks in advance...

Re: gearbox overhaul

I'm showing my technical naivety in that case. The problem is with selection, not with the box. The garage had a look a while back and pushed a few bushes back into place which helped for a while but it's becoming a problem again.

Hi Tom rubber bushes 94 and 112 (3 of each) clean and lubricate the slide bar underneath the gear change lever and make sure the lever does not allow the knob to rotate...you can adjust the individual rods to maximise the smoothness of the selections.after fitting the new bushes...cost of bushes GBP 25 from MB.......**Note the correct gearbox oil is ATF (automatic transmission fluid)

Thankyou. How does one approach the job? From above or below?

Re: gearbox overhaul

Hi Tom Below for the control rods to get them off (one at a time) you can replace the bushes on the bench..when all are re bushed the technical bit is adjusting the travel lying on your back with your hands above your head and everything close to your nose.if you jackup the front of the G' and block the front wheels its easier.. or over a pit... or (pure luxury) on a lift..very fiddly but worth it when you get it right...remove the rubber/leather gaiter in the centre console and pull it up over the gearstick knob to service the gear lever mechanism.
