HOW EFFICIENT IS MY ENGINE OIL COOLER.
HI FOLKS, RECENTLY HAD ISSUES WITH A DISINTEGRATING RAD AND A HOLED OIL COOLER MATRIX, HAD THE RAD RECORED (WESSEX RADIATORS IN HAMPSHIRE £100 CASH) BUT AS THE OILER COOLER WAS ALLY IT HAD TO BE REPLACED-QUOTE FROM MERC WAS NEARLY £300. SO WHAT I DID WAS FIT A OIL COOLER FROM A MGB GT V8, NEEDED TO BE FITTED HORIZONTAL RATHER THAN VERTICAL BUT OTHER THAN THAT AND A BIT OF BRACKETRY AND REPLUMBING THE MOD WENT RATHER WELL AND LOOKS PROFESSIONAL. HOWEVER I HAVE STILL TO CONFIRM THAT THE OILER COOLER IS WORKING EFFICENTLY AS IT NEVER GETS WARM. I HAVE REMOVED ALL THE PIPE WORK AGAIN TO CHECK FOR ANY BLOCKAGES AND REBLOWN THROUGH THE COOLER (MESSY) AND THE CIRCUIT BOTH TO AND FROM THE OIL FILTER BOWL IS CLEAR. DOES ANYBODY KNOW SHOULD THE OIL COOLER GET HOT/WARM OR IS THERE A STAT SOME WHERE. THE MOD TOOK PLACE ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO AND THE TRUCK IS RUNNING FINE, IE NO OIL LOSS OR OVER HEATING PROBS. (PS SHE IS 460 NON TURBO 5CYL DIESEL) MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE.
Hi Lynxman re your previous thread on OIL PRESSURE....fitting a non standard oil cooler may well have restricted the flow of oil around the engine and it is giving you a spurious indication of exceptional oil pressure retention after shut down ..your oil pressure switch could be indicating the "back pressure" between the filter and the cooler" only the oil pressure relief valve is letting oil get to your engine galleries...hence no heat in the oil cooler ...You would be wise to revert to an original cooler which is the same as on the 280Ge...if you go secondhand get it flushed before you fit it. because if it came of a "failed" engine metal particles may have collected in the cooler core..... in your occupation you will be aware of metal particles and the results thereof!!!
remove the cooler and link the outflow and return pipes together then run the engine hot and cold... this will qualify or eliminate the oil cooler causing the oil pressure retention times .....as indicated by the light ....
Isn't there a thermostat on the oil line near the filter?
hi, yes there is a thermostat, it is fitted along with the non return valve inside the filter housing, I know it well. It's possible this isn't opening I guess but unlikely. The temp stamped on the thermostat is 110, so it needs to be fairly hot to open. There are small holes that allow a very small amount of oil to pass when the thermostat is closed, probably not enough to warm the cooler up though. There would be no 'back pressure'. Even if the cooler was completely blocked, it would not make any difference to your oil pressure, apart from maybe having very hot thin oil! Hope this helps. Cheers Scott
I'm not sure of your exact model but probably you need to remove the filter housing (half hour) then the thermostat is easy to remove, a retainer unscrews which has 2 springs- 1 for the non return to the pump, and one for the thermostat.
hi thanks for the swift response the cooler was new albeit a few years old and blanked off so spotlessly clean prior to fitment, the back pressure withheld in the engine was a fault (?) prior to the cooler fit. also there was minimal restriction if any on the non standard cooler, so i am still at a loss, any further comments, observations or opinions would be appreciated
Lynxman.
