Vibes through t case lever
I am getting some vibes through the T -case lever and was wondering what is normal. Mine is a steady vibration when coasting, but increases to a higher frequency ( on/off ) under acceleration. I have recently done the motor mounts ( very worn), Tranny mount, T-case mounts, front wheel bearings due to torn CV boot ( was in there anyway ), and the rear trailing arm bushings. none of this has changed the vibration. The rear wheel bearings were done in the last 2000km's because they had play in them when grabbing the wheel and this also is the same with the new bearings but haven't figured out why, it seems like not enough pre-load yet the sleeve and seals etc. are new also. I am just looking for any other ideas of what to look at for both issues or whether it is likely that the wheel bearings are causing this kind of vibration?
Thanks
If you hold your hand on lever you will get a vibration, but only slight, can you feel any vibration other than that ?
Hi was the vibration apparent before you did all work listed or has it appeared since? I suggest you check the CV joints and splined sections of each prop shaft.. slight wear in the cv needle roller bearings or corrosion on the splines will cause the offending shaft to revolve with an eccentric rotation.check that the marks on the flanges line up at both ends/faces and grease all the cv joints until they ooze clean grease..rmove old grease from the splined tubes and shafts and regrease..use a "red sparkle" grease like ELF multimotive GB 2.... any wear will create vibration.new cv joints are available in the UK but only new propshafts are available from MB...and very expensive......

A small amount of vibration at the lever is normal enough, as long as it is not sevre to shaking the body work.
Cheers,
I'm certainly no G expert, but a couple of thoughts crossed my mind. How worn are your front tyres compared to the rears ? If you have new on the front and worn on the back, then the axles will rotate at different speeds. In a straight line, the pulsing at speed may be due to the small rotational speed difference in the axles being compensated for in the T-case.
Also, is your G riding level? If you have a difference in the propshaft angles, the angular acceleration caused by the universal joints in the props will not match and again the transfer case will have to accomodate the difference in speeds between the front and rear props.
Like I said. No expert but it looks like you have covered most bases.
Hope you find the problem soon
Good luck
Tony
The vibration was there before I did any of the work and has not decreased at all since I have done it. I have had all of the shafts off and cleaned and re-greased them and checked for play in the u-joints and splines ( all seems to be good, but maybe some needles in the u-joints are bad but I can't feel it when moving them.
The vibration coming thorugh the lever feels normal when I'm not accelerating ( just a steady slight vibration). But is it normal for it to pulse under acceleration?
I have also just ran it on jack stands in SA and and the vibes could be heard and felt at the T-case end, way worse than when driving down the road. I then removed the front propshaft and ran it in SA again on jackstands and it was definitely quieter but I still thought there was some vibes, So I took it for a drive with the front prop removed and the harmonic vibration is gone and there is just a steady minor vibe in the lever ( Good ), but everytime it shifts there is a grinding. This only happens when the front prop isn't in. Now I'm thinking maybe a bad bearing in the T-case output ?
Anybody ever experienced a T-case problem or rebuild needed?
Thanks
