Hi, I will buy a G for travelling arround Africa an South America and I am very interesting in the new G280CDI PUR Special Edition but I wolud like to know if the engine can run on any kind of Diesel fuel. As far as I know it must use low sulfure Diesel and in South America an Africa it is hard to find it, can this be a problem? I wouldn´t like to have trouble with the engine in the middle of Africa or Patagonia. Can anyone help me or give me some information about the engine?
Other option would be trying to find an older G300TD o G290 I was told these engines are very good but less fuel efficients and to be honest I fell in love with the PUR30 edition and I am thinking to travel to very isolated places where fuel is no widely available. Thank you very much.

Re: Engine information

are you travelling in the footsteps of the great Ernesto Guevara? A g- wagen should be more comfortable than an old Norton motorcycle. On the engine I would go with the most reliable and the most basic, so would chose a 5 cylinder diesel. Newer diesels engines are more fuel efficient but the electronics make them vulnerable and hard to repair. Where in Africa do you plan to visit?

I would have to agree totally with Paul. The less complex the better. That's why Toy**ta still make a landcruiser with nothing but basics which is still the most popular in Africa. Maybe Merc does to? Don't know. There are plenty of Merc 190's in Africa too which means there's plenty of spares for the G250D and the likes. I drove through Uganda last year in a Toyota and got a hell of a shaking on those roads, so the less to shake or get baked in the sun the better.
