I always reflect on the progress that Rover made from the P6, a very well built advanced design and the junk that was the SD1, where did we all go wrong? And the Range Rover, who on this forum has not considered at one time or other a Range Rover, I certainly have but have always been put off by reliability issues.

Umm what Rover was and what it could have been until the BL bean counters got hold of them. The P6 was such an advanced car, compared to what the Germans were up to at the time it was stunning.

The SD1 was going to be another stunning car, Ferrari Daytona styling with state of the art technology under pinning’s. Then what happened? Backward engineering, live rear axle, unfinished development shoddy build……….ah well. I remember sitting in the passenger seat of a friends Vittesse cruising along in a nice sedate manner. I got to fiddling with the trip computer (yes it actually worked, red lcd display like a Sinclair calculator) and commented on the fact that it seemed a little thirsty. This appeared to be a challenge and he proceeded to demonstrate that it could actually average 2mpg!!  The days of 30p/litre :D

Despite Spider’s experience my knowledge of current Discovery and RangeRovers is that they are excellent quality, extremely reliable but a totally different animal to a G. In lots of ways way better as an everyday vehicle. Wouldn’t like the depreciation though

It can be touchy with modern Ranges. Driven 2 supercharged ones that have just decided they didnt want to work any more, but a discovery that has been faultless and dads got a Range Rover Sport that has been good for the last 3 years (he only got it last year but got it off of good friends so know the history)

Sirocco would be a great car to have i think, and definitely prefer the TR6 to the 7, by a marathon!

Tom
Always fancied a Corrado VR6 Storm (it was going to be a Porsche, if you’re in to useless facts) or a Golf G60 Rallye or a…………………….

I’m off to trawl Autotrader, bye :D :D

there are two great games in live, the autotrader game, and also race the satnav, you see what the estimated time of arrival is when you set off on a journey and then see by how much you can beat it. its harder on motorways, but a roads are great for knocking off time!

Tom - simple things please me

I had secretly wondered if I was the only one that did this, so thanks Tom for making me feel normal. :D

Oh I try to do that too but traffic usually wins. Either that or I try and see what the best mpg are I can get the onboard computer to read out... again traffic usually wins.

Ok, memory lane here.

We have had, not necessarily in order

ancient beetle whilst restoring Alfa 1750GTV
1293 mini with arches and dodgy carbs
1275GT mini
Vauxhall Astra GTE
Mk 2 escort estate 1100, 25mpg and no need to lift off ever
Vauxhall Sportshatch (2.6 Firenza, lurid purple droopsnoot estate with tartan interior) !
3 SD1s, one ex police and 2 Vitesse's - both of which blew up after we sold them
ancient RR V8 with no brakes as it turned out, then we saw the light
assorted GTis, two Mk1, Mk2, a Sirocco Storm in pale blue
MGB GT V8, which encouraged a Marina owner to blow his engine up (wasn't u was it?)
BMW 540 estate, B3 Alpina (pig to sell, and the cost of tyres!!!!!!!), 323 estate
AMG C43 - fabulous, but attracted points to licence
then we got proper cars - ie from Graz and Stuttgart
911S, rebuilt as a shopping racer with a 3.2
944 Turbo - silver rose edition, great car
Cayenne S tip S
968 Clubsport LHD, bought and sold on ebay
Mondeo 1.8LX, unburstable
280G, 300G
now a 500G, a 911964RS for the roof fund, and an Audi A2 petrol, which is a nod to save the planet, but its days may be numbered -its obviously far too normal for us

Lordy, no wonder we never have any money, but not dead yet, and husband has just told me that when you're over the hill, that's when u start gaining speed! I'll look forward to that then.

Obviously, both products of the Fifties to cram so much motoring in, and that's without mentioning the really boring stuff.

Has anybody mentioned Vimto lollies from the corner sweet shop, penny sweet trays, and Tizer and proper cream soda from the pop lorry? Pleeese, somebody be as aged as me!

Space Dust
Vimto Lollies (Now back in Waitrose BTW)
Money back on the bottles of pop (10p)
Tudor Crisps
Smiths Crips
Wimpy burgers

Phew, thanks Spider.

Remmber when you had to unscrew the blue salt packet in the crisps, and beef burgers before Mcd, and fish fingers were novelty?

And the fizzy sherbet that had to be slurped with a licorice straw?

So Spider did you fill up your mouth with space dust just for the 'fun' of it

Also fruit salads were my favourite sweets for ages. Till I discovered opal fruits I think :D

And onelab I spent lots of my hols with a friend in North Wales and the pop lorry was our weekly highlight - our favourites being cherryade or limeade. I don't think we drank anything else so our stomach must have been awful colours, not to mention our teeth

Re: Were you born in the 40's , 50's , 60's o

Traffic lights - like gobstoppers but with different colours as they got smaller - turned the mouth very scary colours - doubtless banned these days.

Those odd shaped cartons that were frozen into ice lollies - Jubblies!!!!! So easy to squash the carton and send them splatting on the pavement - as I recall, picking them up and resuming consumption never hurt either.

Why can u remember all this stuff and not know where you've left your keys? On second thoughts, don't tell me in case it's age-ist or otherwise not PC anymore.

Is it OK to call spider spider? There is a website in the UK where u can still buy all these sweeties..........

I think we should bulk buy space dust, fill our mouths up beyond the recommended amount and see if it still gives you mouth ulcers

Then Tom, who I believe is a doc (of medicine I hope) can recommend a easy, quick remedy.

Mis-spent youth I had :P

OK, OK I have one for you........ The Nose Fountain.

You will need

3 x packets of space dust
1 x can of any fizzy drink
1 x tea towel

1. Open can of fizzy drink and take a mouth full and spit out
2. Open Space dust packets
3. Empty contents of space dust packets into your mouth (All three packets)
4. tip head back 45 degrees
5. Take mouthful of fizzy drink
6. Close mouth and keep as tight as possible
7. Crunch above mixture (very important)

Then watch as everything streams out of your nose!

Other version was a fish hook (with monofilament )
bait with a bread crust ( or whatever)
Throw bait to seagull

and catch them

Getting back to the theme of sweets as its more palatable than blowing birds up with various explosives.

Whatever happened to Jamboree Bags?

I seem to remember that the getting one was more exciting than actually finding out what was inside - usually a few sweets and a plastic toy. used to be about 3p. :P

Jamboree bags were also Lucky Bags in my childhood, but as you say Helen, more anticipation than anything.

Like lots of things in life really, but probably best not go there, as who knows where this thread will end up.

Marg **** who remembers a whole Mars bar for 6d not 6p! Couldn't eat a whole one then either.
