Re: Quality

Odd!!! it is neither a 460 or a 463..more like a 460 but with a turbo fitted .....as for quality you cannot get better...than a G' wagen... for speed..go Jap.....

Re: Quality

Sniff!
Out van is pretty quick
( by my very limited parameters)
I would say though there is just a fractional hesitation when flooring her to overtake.
But NEVER looking for more speed in normal or even motorway driving

Re: Quality

Hi mates,
having experience since 1999 with W461 in my job (greek army) and since 2006 with mine, I would say that W461 is a VERY GOOD truck :D
I agree with marcus 100%.
Cheers Angelos

Re: Quality

Few electronics, enough power, a lot of torque, very quite, good consumption, no fancy equipments. Meaning its a good worker. :D

It's rear wheel drive with connectable front axle (no central differential)

463 is permanent 4wd with central diff.

I thought that from about 1999 or so onwards that all 461s had the same permanent 4 wheel drive running gear as 463s.

That depends very much on what you call offroad and what is important to you in an offroader....

Re: Quality

I think you will find that the Sprinter engined 290G and 290GTD were 461 models with a part-time selectable four wheel drive system and the old hydraulically operated differential locks. The subsequent G270 and eventually G280 were also 461 models, but featured a full time or permanent four wheel drive system with electronically controlled centre or inter-axle differential lock and both axle locks.
When it comes to ability off-road, all other factors being equal (as they are more or less), the full time system, with centre diff-lock engaged, offers no advantage over a part-time system with front axle drive engaged. In fact the drive mode is essentially identical with a 50/50 split front and rear.

Hi all and happy new year,
Having the experience from mine plus the ones that we use in Greek Army, W461 have excelent performance in off road use, the most important think is the tires. 8)

And you were right... but given the tiny numbers in which the Worker has been made since 2001 (not 1999) I thought he was referring to the "normal" 461.

Re: Quality

I have a 2000 model 461 (290GTD) sold in SA with a higher spec trim than the "worker" 461, ie One air bag, ABS brakes, MB Tex upholstery, and different front seats with arm rests. Otherwise exactly the same than the worker with hydraulic difflocks and rear wheel drive (no centre diff) exactly like the 460. It however do have the Kinetic Short Drive Shaft (I think it is called that - the shaft between the gearboxes with the CV joints.)

I also think this is a very good car although I do suspect that in some areas the build quality is not the same as my 1985 460. (paint issues, mirrors appears to start corroding on the edges similar to Land Rover etc but it could be my imagination)

The one big issue all the local users of the 290 GTD have is that the engine tends to run hot in the G. You cannot work it full throttle for a long period on our hotter days (30 deg +) or the temps will go to 110 (105 on mine with a three core radiator fitted) From discussions with local people using the Sprinter Vans with the same engine, it appears to be a very good engine with a long life expectancy.

O and I am not considering the fact that i lost a perfectly healthy engine with 165K km on the clock due to small piece of steel (about 1/8th of a 10mm steel washer) in the oil pump, which appears to have found its way through a small loose edge of the strainer (I am not aware that the engine has been worked on before i purchased it)

Regards
