Hello all

Can any one tell me whether the swivel housing ball was chromed on all models or not? Mine doesn't appear to be and is markedly pitted in places, any problem with this? I have another axle which is very good but would have to swap the diffs as the ratios are different, don't mind doing this but would rather avoid it! Also, on swapping diffs, were all the housings the same? 1 is 1980, other is 1987, look the same apart from breather pipe arrangement which doesn't matter. Thanks for any help. Scott.

As far as I know the chrome swivel balls was an option.

If you fill the hubs with the correct grease the pitting will cause some of the grease to adhere to the exposed surfaces. gets messy after a while and means you have to add grease to the housing every six months or so..the chrome ones are far superior but can peel if the hubs are run dry and possibly tear the wiper seal... which again lets the grease ooze out in liberal quantities.....all axles have a data plate attached near the diff housing.

Hello stig,

If you do have badly pitted swivel ball that does contribute to excess grease by-pass, then a cheap quick-fix would be, after claeaning off the swivel ball, fill the pitts with either body filler mix or some "liquid metal" mix. Do not leave big lumps behind, apply as clean and as tidyly possible.

This is so you do not have to work hard to sand it down with some wet and dry paper to achieve a flush finish. I have never tried this but often thought about should it be come necessary.

Good Luck and best Regards,

Thanks every one, just one last thing about the diffs, will the diff housing of different years be the same should I decide to do a swap?

Basically, I do not know. But can not imagine to be a difference.

To test this out, get a co-operative M/benz dealer to check part number of diff. housing from different years; if the numbers match up then the housing are the same.

Basically, you going into terratary where if answering your question does not make a sale with them, they do not want to know you.
