Diff Locks
I've got 3 orange lights but only one red light for the centre diff. The front is definitely not engaged but I can't tell for sure if the rear is engaged or not. The centre is engaging ok.
Any ideas?
Is it going to be expensive? :(
The first thing to check is that the vacuum lines are airtight. You need to trace the pipe. I found that I had a broken connector where the pipe joined the solenoid. Check all these connectors.
Hi, sorry if I am stating the obvious but did you check that the diffs locked when there was a chance of diffent speeds between the wheels?
Ie. you will need a speed differential before the diff will lock solid.
Therefore in a straight line you will have little chance of the diff locking.
Again, apologies if I am miles off
Hope this helps

Richard
Diff locks suffer from contaminated hydraulic oil.. ie moisture ingress..... (should be changed every three years) which collects in the rams on the axles...the ram must travel the full distance to operate the light circuit..try bleeding each one until you get clear oil flowing into the bleed jar...Dot 4 + is the correct fluid.....see threads on the forum from "tyreman" who finally replaced the rams......
Have you checked the hydraulic fluid in the reservoir?
Hi,
find a nice wet field (with permission of course) or any non tarmac loose surface and engage lockers and drive SLOWLY in a figure of 8 and see if they engage then.
cheers
Richard
Well you have an automatic so you won't have a clutch. The reservoir on the brake cyliner is brakes and the other smaller cylindical one is the diff lox. Both should be just below the cap 5mm or so.
Thanks Roly,
Your right. I'm not sure what I was thinking - there is no clutch
The smaller reservoir is about half full. So I guess I need to get some fluid. Is it the same as the brake fluid? Should I get from my local MB dealer?
Thanks
Richard
Yes, it is DOT4 brake fluid and you can get it from any motor factor.
Thanks everyone,
Richard - I did think that I might need some slippage before the rear/front locks engage but I have not been able to find enough mud to try it out yet. If I do get stuck in the mud, does it mean that they are not working? :)
I will check the fluid reservoir tomorrow.
Checking the vacuum lines and bleeding the rams is probably a bit beyond my capability. I think a visit to my local MB dealer maybe imminent.
Many thanks
Richard
