Hi there
Bit of a novice question here but how common is the Turbo Diesel engine in the w460 300 Diesel? What proportion of these 300GD are Turbo Diesels? What are the benefits of these Turbo engines, are there any consumption differences?

Re: w 460 300GD

All Right Hand Drive 460 300GD models came out of the factory normally aspirated...retrofit turbo conversions were added to increase the performance of the OM617 engine..the factory built OM617a engine was fitted in various applications for the european and american market All in LHD vehicles...there are some RHD 460GD models fitted with the OM617a but all have been retrofitted..I have one and find the engine has much better torque through the intermediate gears but lacks "sparkling" top end performance....

i would agree with fixwin the pick up with the turbo is a totaly differnt experience and is a must if you are to do any serious towing on a regular basis ,i havnt noticed much difference in fuel consumption since fitting my 617a engine .these engines are very rare though ,theres plenty of infomation on this subject in these back forums, tb turbos in lancaster is the firm who convert the non turbo engines

Is it true that retrofitting a turbo might overload the engine? I was going to do that when I still had the 300GD, but many other people suggested me not to do it.

As fixwin pointed out - no such thing as a factory turbo w460. The first turbo G was the w463 G350TD in about 94. They never made a RHD turbo diesel G.

If you are considering a retrofit then be aware that its not a cheap option to do - quite often they need to change out parts - particularly on older engines with higher miles. I think when I had it costed for my 300GD it was about £2-3,000 if I recall.

Sounds about right
I too enquired with TB Turbos about getting a 460 "turboed"
they advised against it generally and especially with a high miles ( 100,000 plus) tired engine.
Having said that I warmed to TB Turbos, very very professional in their approach, rather turn business away than do an installation they were not happy with
But of course, they had a good start fitting turbos to tractors.
Oh ar.

Why is it not possible to rebuild a 617 to 617A spec??
Is there stronger / extra / thicker metal in the block
I understand there are "oil squirters" fitted to cool the pistons.
Is it not possible to retrofit these? and add bigger bearings?

From someone's (Bill?) previous posting about 617 -> 617a;

"The internals are strengthened (new connecting rods, pistons, etc), but compression is still 21:1 subtle differences like twin timing chains up rated oil pump bearings pistons valves and cylinder head "

Given the cost of the bits and likely different block castings (twin chain) very unlikely to do sensible conversion.. heck the injection pump alone would be £2k from some places...
