Had a problem driving home last night
Driving back from central London back to SW London last night and had a problem in the G. On board computer displayed a red warning saying something on lines of: Battery and Alternator warning. Take to workshop.
At the same time the power steering got really heavy and was near impossible to drive. I pulled over on the A4 and had a look, but there was really nothing to see. The car was still running but I figured that the Alternator belt had probably snapped or something. Anyway I managed to drive it back home on the battery but the closer I got home, then less power the car had. Luckily the battery had enough juice to get me and the family home!
Anyway in a previous post Spider1V recommended Gordon Francis @ MB Brooklands. Gave him a call today and he seems a really nice chap. Mentioned you name Joe! I'll need to get RAC down today to tow the car, and hopefully wont be too long or expensive.
I'll let you know what they find. Any guesses?
Can't help with the problem, but make sure that the G is flat bedded down there not towed with 2 wheels lifted.
I can, at the moment, only suspect a problem with the alternator charging.
You had been runing home only on what Battery reserve there was, in which case the Battery will need a full charged up as well, as what ever rectification is required for the alternator. Hope fully, you would only need a set of brushes built into the regulator. (One and same unit).
Regards,
These auxilliary belts should be renewed at every 36,ooo miles or three years intervals'. You will noticed that the belt, by that sort of mileage, develops small cuts running across the width of the belt, this is an indication that the belt ought to be renewed.
It would be a good idea to actually write down the size of belt fitted in your service books. In case of future emergencies, one can order the part with confidence, rather than contemplating wheather the correct belt will arrive on order, whislt being stranded.
Regards,
Thanks for that. I'll make sure of it.
