Hi all,

I have acquired a Mercedes S-class 1985 LHD auto which came from the States and has the 617 turbo diesel engine. I want to drop it in my 460 G auto 1988 as this (I think) seems to be the easiest conversion. Its not me personally doing the conversion but a mechanic as I don't have a great amount of patience. If anyone has any advice for me it would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

Kind regards,

Andrew

Re: 617 turbo conversion

Hi Andrew you will need a flywheel / Dyno balance... if your going for manual transmission... the interface plate to mate the engine to the manual gearbox...some plumbing if you intend to intercool... and a radiator. (mounted in front of the existing radiator) the exhaust interface involves some precision fabrication and you need to maintain the widest bore possible right to the tailpipe to allow the turbo to breath **Note you can remove all the emission control plumbing around the engine that the states insist on.......and reroute the throttle linkeage.....

Re: 617 turbo conversion

Make sure to get the glow plug relay located in the engine compartment on the drivers side wheel well.

As far as the auto transmission the one that is in the S-Class was mated beautifully to that turbo motor. So you have a choice: you can remove just the engine and mount it straight up to your G transmission or you can take the entire (beautifully mated) engine and transmission from the S-Class and place it into your G (you will need to swap the drive shaft coupling at the end of the S-Classes for your G's). Additionally check the shift pattern some sedans have a 1st in the shift pattern and some do not. Also (for a smoother off the line start) most sedan transmissions start in second but this can be adjusted to start in first.

If you decide to go with the Getrag 5 speed transmission the mounting plate is incorporated into the transmission.

I have the 5 speed and really like the way it runs, however I have had numerous autobox turbo diesels in the past and really like that set up as well.
