Need some help or advice for registering my 2004 G in the UK. The car needs to go through the SVA test, and from what I can figure out there are three issues I will face.

1. Headlight are LHD
2. Speedo in KMH
3. Rear fog light

I dont see #3 being a problem, but can anyone help me with 1 or 2? Is there an easy or cost effective way to switch my headlights? Also is there any companies out there that will do a sticker for the G dash?

Thanks.

Re: Registering my G in the UK

the MOT and insurance are not concerned with 1 and 2.

you need to get a certificate of conformity from MBUK

do a search and you should find more info on this as it has been covered in detail in the past.

Re: Registering my G in the UK

You don't mention what type of G, a 461 or a 463?

Speedo just needs to show Miles. If it's a 463, 2004 model with the C-class instrumentation, then it's possible to change the all the readings from Km to miles and set the lower part of the display to constantly show speed in mph, rather than outside temperature. Go to the settings menu on the instrument cluster: a few button presses and it's done. (If your user manual is not in English, download and read the USA user manual on this forum). Headlights are something that an MOT station may or may not look at, but I think it's possible to find some VW Golf headlights that are identical to the non-Zenon versions, but for the UK.

You will also need to swap the wiring around on the rear reversing light and fog light. Best not not cut the existing wires, but to add another wire with the correct fast-on connector to extend the foglamp +ve signal from the exiting foglamp back to the passenger side and similarly, another wire to bring the reversing light signal from the existing lamp, back across to the driver's side. The ground wires can be left alone. Just connect the new extended wires to the lamps and swap the lenses around. This will take about 20 minutes.

On two occasions I found MOT stations to be more fussy about the rear lights than the headlights. The headlights in any case don't have a pronounced L/R fresnel lens part and it's hard to tell without the measuring equipment exactly where they point, so you may be OK with them.

If your new insurance asks for evidence of an immobiliser and or alarm (if fitted), I found that the MB UK customer services (actually based in Belgium) are very good at providing the necessary confirmation. The MB factory alarms conform to Thatcham Cat-1, with the usual MB ignition-key immobiliser:

"......I am able to confirm that your vehicle was fitted with an immobilser, together with an infrared ignition key system, as standard equipment and that the vehicle left the factory with a MBAAS MB alarm system, which is Thatcham category 1 approved....."

If you've imported it from an EC country, then the relevant type-approval information is already on the registration document and so you should not require anything else.

Otherwise you'll need to get a C of C document from MBUK, which I think they charge for, nowadays.

Information on how to decode the Euro registration documents is given here:

Good luck!

A 463 820 01 59 - RHD clear headlight unit for a 2001 G500, yours should be the same.

Speedo, just change the digital display at the bottom. I have the part number for a G500 MPH panel if you need it (the dealer just scrolls through the numbers to get the one for your vehicle).

I just cut and swaped the wires over on the back.

You also need the EEC Certificate of Conformity (yellow booklet that should have come with the vehicle).

I am assuming it is an EU vehicle.

Arnie and Dan

Thanks a mill for your help. The car is a 463 with the on board computer display and I realised that I could show the mph. I confirmed with SVA that it is acceptable for them and they gave me the green light. I put it through a MOT and passed everything but the headlights and the rear fog light (as expected). Anyway Im going to have a look at the headlight one evening to see if it has a switch. Otherwise i'll fit in a VW light and maybe upgrade the light with a xenon kit.

I didnt realise I needed the C&C doc so again thanks for that.

Re: Registering my G in the UK

If you have a copy of the previous European registration document (if it's EU), the European Type Approval should be on it and you will not require a CofC.

The headlamps are NOT switchable, so if your MOT station is insistant, you'll need to replace them with VW ones or UK G500 versions (you'll need either the part number or a G500 VIN for the dealer to order against.)

Realise that if you fit a VW light you will loose the height adjustment feature. You also will not get the clear lenses as you currently have fitted.

I needed a CoC from MBUK even though my car was registered in the EU. Foglights are an easy job to swap.

But you can get clear lense type VW ones (still no height adjustment) when you replace the whole mounting bracket from Ebay from goingfast_info for about £48/pair delivered.

You have an 04 model. The VW light will not work. You need the clear MB unit. I have set the part number out in one of my earlier posts. These are the correct lights for a RHD.
