Hi all

Im looking to 'upskill' in the area of diesel engines so i can perform emergency laybay troubleshooting on my 460 LWB.

Could someone recommend a good book on diesel engines, particularly the early ones something relevant to my diesel 3L OM617 in my w460

Thanks!

Hello,

You may find some old Haynes manuals for other MB cars with the same engine. I used to have one that covered the 300GD engine, but can't remember which car model it was for.

This might have been the one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mercedes-Benz-1976-85-Workshop-Service-Manuals/d...

Otherwise, the MB WIS is available as a DVD set on ebay for about £5. However, although it contains all the info you're ever likely to need, it's not so easy to use it as a general read.

( i ) Keep lub oil of some sort in the engine
( ii ) Keep water or coolant in the radiator
( iii ) Keep diesel or other oily substance in the fuel tank
( iv ) Change filters occassionally / when necessary
( v ) Keep battery charged or carry jump leads
That is all
Sorry I know little more about diesel engines because they are soo reliable
Cheers
Marcus
Seriousley though I use good oil ( but not Mobile 1  )
and change the oil, and oil and fuel filters per recommodations

The W123 series of MB cars had the same OM617 engine. Many used Haynes manuals on this series (1976-'85) also on ebay for relatively little cost.

These engines are pretty much under-stressed and go on for ever, if not abused.

i think if you can change a blocked filter ,bleed system and generally detect any fual pipe leaks or lift pump problems .any thing else will be more than a road side repair . its a good idea too carry a spare filter and spanners to change it especially if you run on bio or chip fat

Thanks for the responses, all very useful info. My next task is to kit out a toolbox with emergency spares, filters and tools necessary for diy roadside repairs.

Does the WIS give step by step preventative & routine maintenance/servicing information?

Yes, tailored to your particular G-Model and with pictures/diagrams, where applicable.

Though specific only to the W201 (Where are you Tom? ) in this link you will find many service and workshop manuals some of which are interesting to G-Wagen owners, such as the manuals for the engines (M102, M103, OM601 and OM602) and the service manual (1981-1993):
