Rear Wheel Bearings? Adjustable?
I took my 463 for its MOT and it went through fine except the Tester thought play on rear wheel bearings. Are they adjustable, and if so an easy job? If not, is the best course of replacement the genuine kit?
i was rummaging through these pages recently looking 4 bearing stuff and found this http://www.mercedestechstore.com/pdfs/G%20files/217%20HO%2006%20Axles%20(IC%20GC%20OP%20TF)%202-17-03.pdf most of what you want is on this forum if you have a good rummage
The bearings are not adjustable and in order to replace, they do need to be pressed off or rather taken off but certainly, pressed-on.
All round M/benz kit is accessable, you may even comprise a kit from local wheel bearing suppliers, but you will need to furnish them with the bearing part number stamped on the bearing its self. That means taking them off, supply part number and wait for them to order. There is a gasket and a seal you still have to order from m/benz to complete your kit so you might as well m/benz to do it all.
Regards,
I note that you wrote " the tester thought". I would be surprised if the bearing were worn. They are straight bearings not tapered and fairly substantial size. Did it pass the mot? What were the symptoms? I replaced my rear bearings but only because the seal(integral with the bearing ) was leaking. The bearings were fine
Hi If you decide to fit new rear axle bearings put them in the freezer for 12 hours before you fit them ...they will tap into the housing with ease using a block of wood across the flat of the bearing and a club hammer..... once you have the bearing resting square in the housing.........getting the old ones out will be harder....a little heat applied to the axle casing around the bearing housing helps.......

I think that on 463 with rear drum brakes, the design of the rear bearings permits a fair bit of lateral movement and this is normal. Though, note "lateral movement" and not rocking on a perpendicular axis. Models with disc-brakes changed to taper-bearings.
If you can only push/pull the wheel along the axis of the axle, that's OK, but you should not be able to rock it or move it up or down.
I think that you need a press.

this are truly great tips, thanks a million! I have some concerns that I would appreciate some help with to trouble shoot my current problems.
I am facing some nasty vibrations and I can confirm that it has nothing to do with the wheel balancing by checking them on both sets of balanced wheels I own.
The suspected cause for this may either come from the recent removal of the wheel bearings, seals and rear drive shaft during a brake maintenance or the removal and putting back the same prop shafts.
Questions:
Is it possible that the bearings etc assembly may have been assembled out of line to cause this vibration when driving? It resonates after after 40kms/hr.
Please note that due to clanking noise heard when driving, the prop shafts were also removed to confirm that there is significant play in the U joints too. In addition, they may not have been replaced the same way they were removed.
Have anyone removed and assembled a prop shaft without marking the shaft to flange positions? I'd like to understand the consequences.
Thanks and appreciate any help I can get with this and will gladly furnish any other info the best I can,
Jeff
No noticble noise on the road. A slight bit of rock when jacked up, alittle worse on one side than the other. Luckily the tester is a decent bloke and let it through. Should there be some play? Think the MB kit is about £80 per side.
