head gasket - recommended 'hours' to do job?
I have an oil leak that I think is from the rear of the engine, possibly the head gasket.
I'm trying to work out wether to just leave it & keep topping up the oil or wether to get my local garage to replace the headgasket.
Anyone know what the advised 'hours' are for the job so I can work out wether it's worth it or not :)
oil is funny stuff ..it creeps.... at want point does it drip on the floor? what colour is it? what volume is there? put a white piece of plastic under the drip area....is the gearbox plug fitted? oil could come from the filter housing. rocker cover gasket. gearbox oil seal. engine oil seaL or the cylinder head gasket....suggest you chemical wash the engine and start your search with clean surfaces so that the puddle on the plastic reveals the colour and smell of the oil....
Hi James if it is leaking "on the run" in any volume yuo would have oil mist all over the rear axle and specks on the rear of the body (backdoor panels and window) if you are putting in more than a litre per thousand miles then you may see smoke from the exhaust when hot and on the overrun (valve guide seals) clean an oil wet area between the rocker cover and the cylinder block monitor for wetness on this surface which will prove the rocker cover gasket idea...any rough running? oil in the radiator expansion tank? fuming/back pressure from the oil filler (cap removed)with engine idleing and hot? pressurising the crankcase will blow oil out of various areas.....
Had an oil leak on the rear offside of the cylinder head on my G300E. Was repaired under warranty, when the car was 18months old.
We'll be examining where the leak is on Friday, but basically these are the facts:
engine oil
offside side of the engine
dripping off bell housing, but coming from above it
engine block 'wet' front & rear offside below gasket line
oil leak from filter ( pipes leading from it ) fixed last year
Leaves a 50pence piece sized puddle whenever I park up + it must be leaking whilst on the move as I'm having to top it up quite regularly.
