Hi all,

Great site. Ive recently purchased an '87 W460 SWB 300GD. It needs a little TLC... some rust repair and paint job.

As a restoration project I would like to add some of the newer Gwagen parts. Particularly the front grill and brush guard. Does anyone know if this is a straight fit or wud it require major modding.

This is the brush guard i had in mind and I would need to replace the grill too.

Something like this, but not too keen on the the light mods.
Front End Styling

BTW I emailed these guys but they are no longer supporting the Gwagen.

Thanks in advance!

Adrian

Those are Brabus mods so take that as expensive. If you want to make your 460 look like a 463 you will need to modify
- grill
- light surrounds
- lower front fender (behind surrounds)
- bumper
- wheel arches
- mirrors
- rear bumper

but for the cost of all these you'd be better off to sell the 460 and buy Buckalec's 463 currently for sale in Belfast.

Re: Brush Guard Uprights - Chrome or Black

this is very true, its not cheap to do these mods, martins g is a steal at that price (regulars will know how much i want it) and it gives the plusher 463 interior and ride of the 463

but it does depend what you want to use your g for

Your 87 G 460 SWB would need to have lots of good things going for it before you consider retrofits of any sort...fully documented service history documented with invoices..minimal rust..no leaks...no oddball modifications like arches and wide wheels..put the Vin number on this forum and we can check the new build details from MB...a good guide to to the depth of your pocket.... WDB460..............on the V5 or data plate on the heater air duct in the engine bay... no sense trying to make a gold purse out of a sows ear...so to speak.....

Tnx for the advice! Buckakecs ride is tempting although when I initially scoped out my wishlist my current G it ticked all the boxes. Manual, selectable 2wd (better fuel economy for everyday driving) & 4wd transmission, Irish registered - no vrt. SWB (more agility off road, sportier I think) also diesal although the jury is out whether on fuel enconomy of LPG vs Veg oil. (the diesel is quite noise tho) These comparissons are mainly assumptions, pls correct me if I'm wrong

My main purpose for this is mostly as a show ride, & to own a piece of classic motor history. I might take it off road 2-3 times a yr but 80% of the time will be short runs on open roads. (hoping to book todds leap 4x4 track in a couple weeks)

Any idea on approx pricing on the 463parts. Do u know of anyone in Irl/N.Irl who wud know enuff bout gwagens to assess worthyness of future spending? (rust, engine, transmission etc)

Tnx

Re: 463 Gwagen mods to fit a 460?

Morning,

If that is what your going to use it for, in my honest opinion your better off going for the 463. They can still mix it off road with the 460's, just look at piggysims on here, even before he modded his g400 he took it places most wouldnt dream of, in fact a lot of the members that like being off road have 463's so that is not a disadvantage.

As for efficiency, an LPG will be softer on the pocket than a diesel in the long run, unless you a vigilant with the veg oil. Performance between the two engines is vastly different and as for the part time 4x4 opposed to permanent, the difference is not that big and the newer engine is going to be slightly more efficient in its running anyway.

Im not hot on part prices, but a lot of the members on here are and would be a great help in that area, and there are many members in ireland that could talk to you, buckalec himself is very knowledgeable on g's having owned more g's than ive had hot dinners over the years!

To me it a no brainer, but obviously it isnt my money, either g is a fantastic vehicle to own but i feel the angle we were getting at is that it is much better just to take the plunge for a 463 instead of spend a very large amount modding the 460 to look like one and not really increasing its value.

But honestly the choice is yours.

regards,

Tom

If you want it for a show ride then a 463 will be a much better choice. It is a quieter and smoother drive. Plus it will be much more comfortable with an updated interior - better seats, newer dash etc

And even if you update everything I have mentioned previously it will still clearly be a 460 to anyone who knows Gs - unless you go through the enormous cost of repositioning your gas filler.

As for fuel economy - the difference is negligible. According to official stats you will get a savings of 0.1 mpg in city driving.

Re: 463 Gwagen mods to fit a 460?

tnx again for the advice guys. Here is the vin number (WDB460 TBC)
This was bit of a blind purchase. Did some research on things to look out for prior to the purchase such as vibrations at speed (there were none) had nearly 1hr test drive & tested out all 2&4wd settings off road. Started 1st time every time. Was told that previous owner had engine rebuilt, & only 16k since on the clock since then. No major rust at rear qtrs that I cud see. Just a bit On drivers door where bottom of window meets metal & around the area where the door catch was on the main body side. Also sum around the bottom front windscreen seal, but in isolated places. It was recently sprayed from burgandy to black. Interior was v gud, just a little rust around seat base bracket, also fan not working - assuming fuse or motor? No signs if water leakage inside cabin, and no oil drops after run parked up.

It was an 8hr return drive down to see it, so was bit already encouraged to make the journey worthwhile. Hence the sale on first view.

I relise I cud be in for problems, fingers crossed! Drove 150 odd miles back
home with no probe. Comfortable cruising at 70mph but didn't want to push
it further with proper inspection.

Wud appreciate any feedback on vin. Or telltail signs. Cheers
