Cheaper (and better?) exhaust

My complete exhaust was in poor shape, and it seems MB charges about € 2000,- for a new one (fitted). Figured I can do better that that and had a stainless steel system made to measure for about € 600,- Instead of the 3 silencers and 2 kms of plumbing on the original system this one is as simple as possible: 2 flanges, a short piece of tube, 2 mufflers and a diffusor. The original mounting points were used. It produces a sound that I feel suits the car. A modest low rumble at low revs while quiet at motorway speeds.
Tried to attach pics, hope it works. If not there's one in my gallery.

That looks really neat. Is there also a bracket between the two mufflers? I had a ss one fitted several years ago to exactly replicate the original. Should have just done what you did.

that looks a smart method youve got there, and at less than half the cost!

thanks for the pictures

Re: Cheaper (and better?) exhaust

@ Roly: There's no bracket (yet) between the two mufflers, just one before the first and after the last muffler (that's where the original exhaust is mounted). I'll probably have to change that because the setup tends to start vibrating when idling, so the extra bracket in the middle is next on my to do list.

Hi We have just installed the same system to a LWB 1991 GES with slightly smaller bore...this now leaves the near side clear for a"torpedo" style LPG tank... leaving the rear load space un'encumbered.... cost GBP 290 + vat......

Worry not Spider there are advantages to the factory system, such as being sure there are no odd vibrations at certain speeds. I removed one section of muffler and replaced it with a straight pipe on mine, and that resulted in a section of insulation on a separate part of the system coming loose, despite being welded on many times. In the end I returned to original spec and voila, no more vibrations.

Re: Cheaper (and better?) exhaust

I would like to have a similar system fitted to my 460 280GE; the Netherlands is convenient for me.
Can you please post or PM the supplier details, do they speak English? Do they have a web site? Urgently required for MOT December.
THX

Re: Cheaper (and better?) exhaust

Hi James you will incur lots of extra costs trying to fit a similar exhaust to a 460- 280ge because the down pipes from the manifolds run inside the chassis leg unlike the 463 which is into the wheelwell in the offside front wheelarch....at some point you will have to go under the chassis leg to obtain a side exit exhaust... or change the down pipes from the manifold to exit into the offside wheelarch and remove the chassis tube that runs across the rear of the wheelarch. or run your new silencers to somewhere short of the rear axle with the tail pipe curved to face and blow onto the ground...at the risk of exhaust fumes being drawn in around the back door seal or a backfire igniting any petrol fumes you may have lurking around the fuel tank.....

Re: Cheaper (and better?) exhaust

THX fixwin38,
My down pipe is also cracked and needs replacing, any suggestions on who could do this work? I am on assignment in Paris for the next 6 months, so if any French members have had exhaust work done, could they point me in the right direction.
Otherwise I can bring the GWagon to the UK any weekend, so somewhere around the London area would be good. Need to get this work done during December for MOT
Cheers

Re: Cheaper (and better?) exhaust

Hi Powerflow exhausts are country wide ..Southampton Tyre and Wheel Totton 02380 667107 they will fabricate to pattern (about GBP 400) the last time I used them...the front pipe is Not easy to copy but if it is only the flexi bit that has failed it will repair...otherwise new from MB at GBP 200+ rgds....
