Wire in Spare-Wheel Carrier

I've noticed an electrical wire that runs from the body to inside the tubing of the external, fold-out, spare-wheel carrier arm, (G400-cabrio) but can't figure out what it's for.

It might be for:

a.) sensor-switch to warn if the wheel carrier is not locked?
b.) anti-theft alarm system?
c.) something else (no 3rd brake-light fitted)?

Can't seen to make it do anything. Any ideas anyone?

Its for a third brake light. You can see it mounted just above the spare in the picture below. Older ones are more square rather than rectangular.
