Took the 2001 G400 to an MB dealer to have the transmission fluid changed as it was approaching 37,000 miles. I was expecting them to tell me that it's "sealed for life" and doesn't need a change, but in fact they acknowledge that the latest wisdom from MB is that a change is recommended at 60,000km or 37,500 miles. The bill came to less than expected at £183 including labour, oil and new filter and gasket, but then I noticed that they only changed 4-litres of oil at £8.15 /litre. I guess maybe they forgot about the TC.

The box was filled with the A 001 989 21 03 10 oil which is not the latest 7-G-tronic, 722.9, oil (A 001 989 45 03 10).

But if I'm to re-do the job, I am wondering whether it might be best to use the Fuchs Titan-5000 oil or the Titan-3353 oil (as recommended for the 722.6 and 722.9 'boxes). I think that the former might well be a fully synthetic higher-spec, heavy-duty oil. It has better cold operating characteristics and is MB approved (236.8, I think). Also, I note from other forums that the cost of the new A 001 989 45 03 10 (=3353) oil from MB dealers appears significantly less than the older A 001 989 21 03 10 oil, so it might not be as good? (wonder if A 001 989 21 03 10 = Titan-5000???)

Anyway, I found this interesting article on how to do it yourself and apart from the dip-stick issue, its just like the ZF boxes on the earlier Gs.

that's the mistake they all do by not spinning the torque converter and draining another 2 ltrs from that , run it for a while then drain again which would have then diluted what's in the torque converter and it will be fine

This was discussed on this thread recently about the oil change.

I had mine done yesterday and the mechanic said that he only got 4l into the 'box including the t/c. He said that he drained it all. The manual states 8l total new fill so there is 4l which is inaccessable during normal changes.
I like the 36000mile change recommendation.
I used the same oil as you £10/l incl vat

Alot of the newer (98 on) 722.6 gearboxes do not have a drain plug on the torque converter, I have turned some engines over by hand 2 or 3 rotations and thought I was missing something but since read the newer ones do not have it. If you do change the fluid again to try to get it purer than 4 litres of old with 4 litres new then make sure you use the same MB did.

Yes, I've now read that the TC drain plug was removed from year 2000 onwards. However, the two rectangular rubber stoppers are still there on the bell housing.

Probably, I'll run it for a while and then change it again, as suggested. I guess with 50% of the oil renewed, it would be roughly in the same state it was 20,000 miles ago.
