bump starting an auto with a jammed starter motor
On friday night after copious lubrication Russ 280 and I were debating trying to jump start my 280 auto via the means of a high speed tow (40mph) then switching from N to D, has anyone attemped this and lived to tell the tale (as importantly did the G survive). I believe it is discussed in the handbook but I am the other of the country from my G and hence handbook.
Background 24 year old starter motor packed in new Bosch fitted jammed solid after 3 months and I can't get at it with out proper ramps etc.
I guess the other alternative is tow it (slowly) to 3 miles from home and then ring Green Flag (no home start, i am to cheap :D )
Just need to get to my independent garage but would like to avoid the cost of a flat bed to get there........
It is do-able but don't attempt it more than twice if it doesn't start as it is not good for the gearbox to be dragged around for too long.
Is the starter motor jammed in the ring gear? Obviously you couldn't tow start it if that were the case.
The owner's manual says you can at about 20mph I think. I would start towing in gear to avaiod sudden stresses.
If it is the starter with the external solenoid sometimes that works loose and jams the plunger.I think you can reach in through the wheelarch back panel using a long bar or piece of wood and givethe solenoid a couple of "gentle taps"..is the motor running and not engaging? or is there no click when you turn the key? if you put a socket and bar onto the power steering pulley nut you may be able to move the crankshaft and free off the stuck bendix.......if that is the problem.....
you can, I have done it on a coupe of occasions, tow it for 100yds then put in into second and she will start.

Exactly as described. Once pulled a SWB Auto to a successful start using a Yaris!!

Guys, I'm not nitpicking but in case I need to do this one day, I'd like to know how it was done before. You put the auto transmission into 2nd??
tow it in neutral for 100 yds then select second gear, and it will start almost immediatly
thanks pp, early rise too!
how can it be done on an auto?
tia
believe me it can!!! it even says it in the manual
the onlly challenge given were I live was finding a long enough straight section of lane (they are all single track) to build upto 25-30 mph
I've been told that where you go in the week John there are things with flashing lights red, amber and green and roads that go round and round in circles. whats that all about
whoo that's just plain wierd............life but not as we know it :? :?
Is that why some of the poor people spend lot's of time underground?
(no offence intended :D)
Thanks when i am back from the smoke on friday i will give it a go
