G sounds like london bus, whats this sound??
Ah yes back to the 60's and the old routemaster London bus, but why does my 300 gd manual 1989 sound like one.
Recent new rear diff oil seal fitted by garage as I had a leak and all was fine. I covered 400 miles and all well. Then towing my caravan and I had a whirring sound start and continue ever since. The sound is present even when coasting out of gear with the clutch in at 15 mph. Most advice is a knackered diff due to a poor fitting job.
I just noticed a lot of play in the rear wheel bearings as well.
I am genuinely in despair as this is my only vehicle. all advice welcome as I'm having a bad day, cheers Vic b
Any reputable mechanic should have changed the oil when he did the seal, did yours? If he did then metal in the diff is bad news after only 400 mles.
Importantly, when a seal is done the nut has to be done up to a set preload on the crown and pinion gears. This is a precise job. If he did it up too tight the the gears will destroy themselves very quickly. It is possible that this has / is happening to yours. Take it back to the mechanic and get him to fix it.
have word with Kev James in the Stuttgart Garage in Pontypridd he looks after mine and has owned 460's himself
It needs to checked for correct preload by a person who knows how to check it. There is a spacer that gets crushed to the require size and will need replacing if it has been overtightened. A specialist diff refurb place will be able to do it. If you continue to drive with the preload too tight you will destroy the crown and pinion gears and have to replace them... If you sort it out early enough the damage may be mitigated.
I just drained the rear diff and the base has a good deal of iron filings in it, however it may not have been changed for years, where do I go from here?? Vic
