Hi,

Need a bit of advice please :)

Whats the best way to take the Body kit/plastic parts off from around the wheel archs (its a 280ge) with out breaking them lol?

Also once off I want to repair the metal thats holding the wheel body kit on as its all falling apart etc. Whats the best and easiest way to do that?

Many thanks
Joe

Small angle grinder with new cutting disc plunged into thread area to minimise the metal removal (instead of a sideways cut as you might usually do). Do several cuts and go slowly with a wet rag which you regularly dab onto the metal to keep it cool.

Mine had them put on with M6 nut and bolts but was not factory (and I was the second person to cut them off as there were grinder marks already) .. not sure what 460 OEM is but 463 OEM is by bolts into plastic plugs into holes in the body.

Hi thanks alot!

Also I have alot of rust on the headlamp surrounds (once you take the black covers/grills off)

How can I fix this as it seems to have a circle bubble that holds the headlamp in(guess to stop it getting wet) which has also gone rusty

I had rust in the bottom of the headlight bowls. You can buy the bowl alone from MB (they had to set it up UK costs as they had never sold one before!) which is what I did ... then I took the good top from the bowl I replaced .. and put it onto the other side's less poorly bowl base.

You can buy the whole front face of the wing with bowl .. which while nice considering the welding I had to do on the very bottom trim would also give the wing a chance to go out of shape. Look (but don't buy.. UK dealers are cheaper!!) at German e-bay to see. You can also buy the back part where it joins the main shell as a seperate part.

I was cutting the lacquer back last night on the wings but no photos after primer .. I guess after this weekend I might even have some pictures of waxed and polished silver wings to add.. yet to be Dinotrol wax coated.

.. or do you mean the inside of the black covers themselves... or the mounting steelwork for the lenses?

You can buy nearly everythings for a G still .. normally at fair prices from the dealers (if you find a good EPC operator there (MB parts program)). Sometimes you get shockers... like the fan at £150, and front mud flap sill mounts at £30 for a bit of wee bent steel..

So yes you can buy wings .. go look at German Ebay for more than dealer prices

This is G parts in German Ebay;

This is a new front wing from the above search at 282 Euros .. or there is one up at 180 Euros secondhand

As for getting the front wing off... the real issue is IF your front bolts come off from the bodyshell .. there are 2 of them you get to from inside the wing with about M10 thread so about 19mm A/F spanner .. best to use a 6 point socket and plenty of "plus gas" etc. Mine came off with about a 17mm socket they were that rusty.. and I broke one stud so had to butt weld a new one on   . The other issue is that on the passenger side (RHD) you have the vacuum reservoir for the brakes that has to come out.. again broken M6 studs and I ended up making a new mounting plate as it was mostly rotten ... and more butt welding onto the M8 studs on that are moulded into the plastic tank

Next thing will be... that you will find that the bottom of the inner wings mounts onto the chassis are rotten (someone had done a bodge job in place with mine which had to be redone)... and before you know it the whole front end is missing!! .. got photos if you really want!

Presume you have already investigated the rear end over the lights where they rot too.. and the back door .. apart from that they are pretty sound.. well removing the wheel arches will uncover some corrosion at the front inner edge where 2 panels join..

Hi!

Thanks alot thats really helpfull :)

Do you mean the lights at the rear (brake/indicator etc) if so yeah i've noticed this and its pretty bad but i think i can fix it (with help :P) and the bottom of the backdoor is bad but not horrific. Do you have any advice for the backdoor?

Many thanks

Rear panel holding the lights yes .. MB full panel is only £30 or so but is quite a bit of work to install.. but you do get to fix it so that it does not happen again.

Back door... not really.. I was lucky enough to have a new one fitted to mine .. I did wee patches on the passenger doors and then hammered flat with panel beating dolly .. now filled and you cannot see the distortion but go slow on flat panels to avoid distortion.
