Hello Jonnyboy,
The internal surface of the speedo cable can wear out, one cause of speedo needle flucuating, the grease inside the cable drys off, in which case you might try lubricating it by using a thin viscosty oil.
But the more productive answer is to replace the cable, that is after, decucing it is not the cable but, the speedo head its self is not at fault here. With the speedo head removed, try and gently work your speedo with a drill to turn or drive it to check on the speedo needle performance.
Check out the drive fitted to the transfer box, these chew up also.

Re: wobbly >30mph speedo?

My speedo has a similar problem... but it wobbles at speeds of LESS than 30mph, so the other way around from Jonnyboy. And when slowing down or coming to a stop, the needle will "bounce" on the limiting pin up and down until it settles.

The wobbling and quivering of the needle is super unnerving... same solution as you've suggest above, Pistonhead, or is it something else?

Many thanks,
Hova

Ditto, you've got it. But, in small number of cases this can not be ruled out, there may be a fault on the speedo head, the only way to is to test each independantly. I am afraid trail and error in this case.
