Can anyone please advise us on engine changes?

We live in & travel around Ireland with our 4 kids, would love a G. However, we couldn’t live with the fuel bills on a c6 year old G500 and the G55 is too mad a proposition.
We would seriously consider any worthwhile options regarding installing a powerful diesel engine (similar to a Merc 320 cdi or bigger) into a host UK spec G500 or G55.
Has it been tried, who? Often?, which garages?

Thank you

why not convert a petrol to lpg, i recently had an lpg range rover and it was great to run, it would be much cheaper and easier to do than transplant a diesel.

otherwise if you really want a diesel you could buy a diesel lhd or older rhd, look on mobile.de for german g's, importing could be much more economic than a transplant!

hi i would have thought cost of buying donor vehicle parts required and any conversion labourcosts would be far outweighed by either buying 400gd 4 litre diesel or a g500 petrol and biting bullet on fuel costs or going for older 300gd with turbo conversion for extra bhps or 300gl david

You could always buy a G300 TD... they have a fair amount of punch particularly if you chip it. Ok its not a G500 but it is quicker that a G300 Petrol.

And it runs on veggie oil....

I agree with Capalongo, it wouldn't be worthwhile to convert a G500 to a diesel. The straight 6 320cdi won't fit because the engine is too long. And the new V6 320 is current technology so you might as well buy one from the factory.

Point of interest.

A conversion of a petrol engined G Wagen to run on autogas with a LPG fit won't work in Southern Ireland as Auto LPG is rarely found in garages.

Only option is old Australian kit to decant LPG from home heating cylinder to fitted gas tank and let the wife up your life insurance policy beforehand.

Agree with Capolongo old diesel with turbo and get friendly with your local fish n chip shop owner.

Regards,

Mike

PS I have a 280GE with LPG conversion over here and its about as useful as t-ts on a bull.(mamory glands)
