http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MERCEDES-G-WAGON-RADIATOR_W0QQitemZ130197732050QQi...

somehow this looks like a 463 rad to me, but i haven't seen a 460 rad unmounted but the top sure looks different...if it does fit a 463 then that's a good price (no relation to the seller..just observing)

unless your rad is falling apart james, have it recored mate.

it will cost you a lot less.

i recored a rad i got off cliff for my 280 and had it recored for about £80.

i think its cheaper outside london :!:

£80  Thats cheap. So far I have been quoted around £250.

That ebay photo on the link above is also used on the sellers other items for a radiator for a porsche 928. I wonder if that is an actual photo of the item he has for sale ?

Always possible they have the wrong picture on ebay. Ask him for the actual picture of it.

Re: ebay radiator, 460 or 463?

Looks like a 463 radiator to me, there was a new radiator for sale before on eBay I didn’t buy it because mine has a integral engine oil cooler fitted and the one for sale did not have one in. I’ve just fitted a new one £335 +vat I didn’t buy it from Mercedes they wanted around £650 +vat, to re-core it was £150 +vat but because mine has a oil cooler in one of the side tanks and I didn’t know its condition after 150000 miles & 16 years corrosion so I went for new. The radiator I got is the same manufacture as the original one fitted by Mercedes, and the temperature is now constant.

Re: ebay radiator, 460 or 463?

Engine oil or auto trans fluid cooler ?
seems in Mercedes cars anyway the cooler pipe for the auto trans fluid corroded inside the radiator and knackered the transmission due to contaminated fluid?
Excellent engineering there.

Re: ebay radiator, 460 or 463?

in the auto 463 (1991) the bit to the right of the rad (viewed standing in front of the car) is the transmission oil cooler, the hoses come from the side of the engine. must be careful taking them off because they might be stiff, and too much force might break the plastic bit of the radiator off (not a problem if you're fitting a new one, but a problem if you are re-cording, as they re-use the sides).

Marcus
The transmission and oil pressures are higher than the water pressure so if you get a leak it will fill the radiator with emulsified oil/water and not go into the engine or transmission, coolers in the water system is common right throughout heavy construction machines, It’s a good closed system no external coolers to get clogged. Best to use a good quality antifreeze mix to keep corroion out of the engine and coolers.

Re: ebay radiator, 460 or 463?

Ok news to me,
I was merely repeating what I had read, presumably in a car mag, or indeed Honest John in the Daily Telegraph, not that he is infalliable.
I had felt that MB would have used the best engineering solution available, and actually wondered does it also heat the transmission fluid up quicker? in low temps.
Anyway since Mr Benz reckons that one should change the rad as part of preventive maint, at about 100,000 miles  ? this should never be an issue.
cheers

Hi Marcus
Sorry I didn’t want to sound smug, and was relating what happens heavy plant when the cooler goes. I only assume that the G wagen’s pressures would be the same and not contaminate the transmission or engine. You are right about water/antifreeze in the engine or auto box as antifreeze is very corrosive and will wipe out friction plates big end & main bearings. I’m sure I will be corrected if I’m wrong

Out of interesst I contacted the seller :

Dear hot66,

Hi
the radiator on ebay is not for your car, the picture is Generic, the radiator for car has the following opart number: 4635001200 and the price is £347 plus delivery.

Re: ebay radiator, 460 or 463?

Well 28 hits on that part number, 10 for Europe .. it is
461 290GD

463
G320/G36 AMG
200GE/230GE/300GE/500GE
G300TD
G55(+AMG)/320/500
G400/270 CDI

.. so just about every 463?
.. and which European market wanted a 463 2 litre petrol G  .. Italy?

BUT 290D EPC shows the normal 2 part radiator+by side transmission cooler on page 1 as a radiator.(A0015016301 on 290D).. then on page 2 this part number as a radatior ... looks like an non water radiator.. cannot work out if it is air con, air/water intercooler radiator or something else.. but the 2 wee pipes are not full engine cooling pipes.. they are called "Water-cool oil cooler transmission" as a summary.... so looks like an alternative transmission oil cooler .. the vertical side oil cooler beside radiator is engine oil cooler on a 460 300GD which is not required on the more modern engines which have oil/water cooler on the block (well 290D does). My guess is late manual 290D without transmission oil coolers use this rad... while auto ones use the old vertical 460 engine oil cooler to cool the transmission.

Meanwhile on a G320/G300 this part number is definitely the water radiator .. and the transmission cooler is wide and low in front of the water radiator..

.. so it is a 463 water radiator if he quotes A 463 500 12 00 .. and double check if you have a low wide transmission oil cooler out in front of the radiator and a one part water radiator flowing from LHS top to RHS bottom (where RHS=in front of RHD driver..)

Confused now!?

Re: ebay radiator, 460 or 463?

lol let me confuse things further, if i read the message correctly, the seller quotes the correct part number for hot66's application, NOT the one on sale...

Re: ebay radiator, 460 or 463?

ebay picture of radiator is definately not for a 460 model, the 460 have header tanks that are top and bottom mounted. The picture shows an aliuminium matrix with plastic headers that are mounted on the sides.

Having said that, I am still not certain for two reasons, that it would be a 463 radiator either. The 463 radiator has the inlet and outlet feeds, both, on the same side of the radiator, this picture shows one feed on one side, and the second feed on the opposing side.

The 463 feeds are, as follows: the inlet is mounted at the bottom-right of the rad. bending upwards; the out let is mounted top-left and comes straight outwards.

Further, on the same side as the feeds are, the side-headers have screw connections mounted for the automatic gearbox cooler and engine oil coolers.

The picture does not show that clearly.

Allbeit, I advise caution.
