I'd like to have my recently purchased G checked and serviced. What's your advise: go to the official MB dealer or to a G specialist? I have no experience with the G specialist -heard good things about them but that's it. Do have experience with the local MB dealer: they did expensive but good work on my 68 250se.

You have some very good G specialists in the Netherlands. Can't speak for sure on MB - in the UK they are not so good but then the G is not officially sold over here.

hi Most MB dealerships have to go through a "Learning Curve" when it comes to G' wagen..and charge you accordingly...lots of wasted manhours...G' specialists are few and far between in the UK but the GWOA has a wealth of experience... if you are handy with the toolbox!! .I can fax you a 47 item pre workshop visit visual inspection schedule which you can do yourself.... then if in doubt ask the forum....... and find a good mechanic who will do the wrench bending and the dirty bits.....

No way the MB dealer....

The haven't got a clue but they charge you as if they had designed and manufactured the G themselves....

Follow fixwin advice. I do most of the stuff myself, get a 20% discount in parts and sleep well in the certainty that the G is maintained properly...

Thx for the replies guys. The G specialist it is.

I can fax you a 47 item pre workshop visit visual inspection schedule
Fixwin: is this schedule available for download anywhere? The last time I used a fax was under my rear wheel for extra clearance :-)

I would be interested to know who you used in NL. I am happy with the work done by G-Center in Amstelveen - B service and some body work.

The nearest specialist was G-service in Zutphen (www.g-klasse.nl), so I tried them. Friendly guys who unfortunately for me specialize in even older G's. They're helpful and have decent prices though. I asked for a 'grote beurt' (not sure what that's called in english - big service when translated literally) and a thorough check-up because this was my first service on this car. What I got was new oil for engine and gearboxes, new filters and the message that the car is in good shape. Not quite like the way the MB dealer works (with reports. measurements etc), but I guess that was to be expected. In all not a bad experience, but I think I'm going to try the MB dealer next time, so I can compare levels of service and prices and see if it's worth it ...

Thanks - very interesting. The guys at Amstelveen were very knowledgeable - not least because they look after the KLM fleet at Schipol. Amstelveen is also very easy to get to/from the UK by overnight ferry from Harwich to the Hook, and also its an easy ride into Amsterdam and back by tram while they work on the car.....

An update on this subject: last week I took the G to the official MB garage because it wasn't running well (and because they're 50 mtrs from where I work). Asked them to do an overall check and a compression test. They produced a list of almost 20 points that need attention (most of them normal wear and easy fixes though). Those weren't sales arguments either: the mechanic showed me every single item on their list. The result of the (dry) compression test is that cylinder 1 has nearly half the comression of the others so that probably means some serious repairs :-( I have a few questions about that but will post them in another topic. In all: Dutch G-owners really should consider taking their car to the MB dealer.

I would say that MB World at Brooklands have a good G specilst. If you do try them, book under team lead by Gordon Francis (He when they launched the G in the UK was responsible for driving the press around)

Re: Servicing the G at the official MB dealer - do or don&#0

Took the G400 to MB Brooklands for a change of Transmission fluid (auto-box). The job was done (very reasonable, £190 including filter, oil etc), but they noted that the V-belt , although not bad, could do with being replaced as it was showing small cracks in the rubber surface. At the time, they thought, however, that it would be a big job involving the removal of the Intercooler for access.

When I called to book it in again, they quoted less than 1-hour (?) to do the work, and so I made an early appointment, for a while-you-wait service.
The night before, however, I found an old copy of the WIS and looked up the service procedure. It was "ZM"-rated, meaning as long as necessary, but it did look to be more than 1-hour, certainly.

The next day, I arrived at 08:00 and the technician began working on the car at 08:30......At 12:00 he was still working on the car and the service manager kindly loaned me a brand-new E-class to get to work. At 5:00 pm, I received a call saying the job was done. I collected the car at 6:00 pm, all cleaned and washed.

Anyway, what I wanted to say is that they were very good about the work and although the job took about 8 hours, they only charged for 4 hours and included a 3+ discount (20% I think on parts and labour). I guess if you're familiar with this engine and the G, then probably 3-4 hours is what the job would take, but still, compared to previous experiences with other MB dealers, even on standard MB cars, I would highly rate MB Brooklands.

As bad a rap as dealers get - they do have their place. They have to make it good and will do it even if it is at a loss to them.

Can't guarantee that with an independent.

And if you can get the 3+ discount its not bad....

Glad you had a positive experience. Did you remember who you booked it in under? Brooklands look after my Merc's since they have opened (My old MB Dealer Mechanic went there and I followed). Did a great job on the replacing the Kats and exhaust a few weeks back. (Mind you exensive parts, but they did discunt them as much as possible! )

Yes, Andrew Hillier (Service Manager). Maybe it was your G that I saw there a couple of weeks ago, when having the auto-box oil changed?
