Headlight surround blackening (not painting!)
Hi,
I know there is another post about the Headlight surround painting on this forum but what I want to know is:
Is there a way of blackening the Surrounds without painting/spraying them?
Hope you can help
Many thanks
Joe
Back to black or other bumper restorer.
60 quid will buy you new one....

shoe polish
That would be light surrounds on the boot then :?:
im sure the latest (461) ones which are paintable plastic are only £21 each from mb
461 surrounds on order last Thursday from dealer .. not sure on price but this a good guide if you expect Euro = GBP after VAT; The 460 ones were 50-60 GBP each last time I asked and I have not bother to look them up since.
A 461 880 01 40: COVERING (VERKLEIDUNG) (kg): 0.39; 28.73 Euro plastic headlight surround Left
A 461 880 02 40: COVERING (VERKLEIDUNG) (kg): 0.39; 28.73 Euro plastic headlight surround Right
I presume they are hard plastic like the wheel arches instead of rubber over steel plate.
shoe polish/back to black is the best diy option, take them off and do it inside in the dry/warm and it will work good

Well here are some photos of the 461 parts for those who like to see things.
They have a dimpled texture .. which is a pain to take off if you want smooth painted ones.. I think I ended up with 120 grit in an electric Dual Action sander .. but they do have stainless clips at the top but then the 460 ones are nicely rubber coated for a non rusty but compliant fitting (while rubber lasts)
The one on the Right is 460 Rubber .. ignore silver paint .. that is covering exposed coroded steel backer.
Nice, and reasonably priced.
Might have to pick some of these up.
.. and when painted .. they can look like this (took a few days work.. or is that years if you take the rest of the car in... )
(Please ignore bumper/spots/wheel arch trim; still need work, just checking fits)
Bonus is that you can now qualify for "lightweight" G as it saves about 2kg per corner on the outer edge of the vehicle CoG
Nice job you're doing there....
Thanks Morty .. not done anything since May .. now need finish it now as Snow will be upon me .. must get the summer car put away (yellow corner in wet photo)
Wet look after first movement last spring, and first water in 2 years
.. and Stuck in snow in March 2006  (well I did drive out but only after much shovelling and I could only move 6".. so does that count?).
nice bit of advice, great price too!
will order a set and colour code them in red....
