Tom Sheppard's G
Stumbled across an article by Tom Sheppard in Truck Trend with some nice photos of his G.
I park like that sometimes too.
If you look at the top centre of this pic, ignoring the car a moment, you will see a 10.000 year old cave painting
Those B&Q superstores are alot bigger since they started catering for the construction trade
So I take it he is filtering fuel, but what is with the inclination of the "G", and the cloth at the fuel filler spout, is that a permenent fuel filler extension or a clip in one,
as one for our van would be very useful,
fighting with the spare wheel is bloody annoying
Is this van an automatic 290 GD?
Cheers

great pics... a little nostalgia for those of us suffering from Dakarphobia

He had a fuel problem so he drained and filtered it before putting it back in.
I think the car was 'ramped' at that angle for easier access to the drain plug.
The filler extension is a permanent one - I have one too - bloody usefull as it will easily support the jerry can while filling. If you have the split rear doors with swing out carrier then it may not clear the tyre.
Quercus will tell you more but I think he looked at your 290 before ordering a new one direct - so yes it is a genuine 290gd rhd, auto.
Tom Sheppard is a journalist, photographer and publisher and as such each opportunity, such as this is documented for his books. He travels alone and must have used the camera timer to 'pose' this shot, though the fuel problem was real enough.
You can still buy his book from the RGS
Essential bedtime reading for £35

No longer available according to the RGS website.
About £100 when you do find a copy.
I'd give them a ring, I know someone bought a copy before christmas.
The new RGS website is a bit awkward and out of date sometimes.
I've said this before but there is a nice article on him about driving in his G in the Fall 2007 issue of Overland Journal.
