Newbie question please be kind. How do I know what type of injection system I have?

i.e is it J-Tronic or K-tronic or ??-tronic?

Also i took in for service recently - the mechanic stated the lambda system was not original to the vehicle and he couldn't get parts thru MB.

This seems unusual to me - weren't all FI systems needing O2 sensors??

Yes it has a catalytic converter.
1) why is this significant?
2) was this an option in '86? and maybe this issue has something to do with the statement that the O2 was not original equipment?

Hi only that you would have a lambda sensor with the Cat converter...If emission rules in Austria dictate that a 1986 vehicle should have a Cat you will have to keep it..if not remove it along with the lambda sensor ...Peter quite rightly expressed his doubts that a 86 G' would have had a Cat fitted.... since Cat Converters are not a standard feature on UK spec RHD 230ge models ....

Thanks all for the comments.

So it seems the car was not originally cat equipped but now is.
And I assume (will check with Austria Auto Club) that the cat is need to meet Austria emission standards.

So my question is: Can anyone point me in the direction of source info on after market cat retrofits, including equipment requirements/modifications needed to original equipment and some trouble shooting advice?????

many thanks in avance.

FYI - I located this note on the Catalytic Converter retrofit. Seems I'll be able to locate some background on this in some of the German boards.
++++
5.2 Germany
Germany conducted a voluntary retrofit program using tax credits as an incentive. A vehicle which had an approved system installed received a special certificate. The certificate was then used to obtain a 550 DM credit (about $275 at the time the program was in operation) for a TWC converter only or a 1100 DM credit ($550) for TWC with closed-loop control. The tax credit offset about 50% of the installation cost to the consumer.

The converters used in this program were typically the original vehicle manufacturer's converter used on current production
vehicles. Most of the vehicles involved in this program were Volkswagen, Mercedes, and BMW models. The German program focused primarily on privately owned vehicles. Since 1985, hundreds of thousands of vehicles have been retrofitted with catalysts. The program included several stages of increasingly stringent emission reductions with proportionally higher tax credits.

The program is now being administered by individual German states and is expected to end around the year 2000.
